Comps-sur-Artuby walks

This short route in Comps-sur-Artuby offers a change of scenery, with an almost mountainous atmosphere in its short forest section. Magnificent views of the river gorges (the Artuby) and the impressive cliffs, at the top of which you can look for chamois. Vultures can often be seen gliding overhead.

A lovely walk from Bargème and its castle to the banks of the Artuby with its turquoise waters. You will enjoy splendid views of the surrounding area as far as Mont Coudon. Part of the walk is in the sun (take care in summer) and part is in the woods (very pleasant).

A walk around a little-known village with hidden gems, close to home! Montferrat is located 14 km north of Draguignan. The hike starts at Place des Allées, west of the village in front of the pretty village school. The esplanade, a former transhumance site, is adorned with centuries-old plane trees and bordered by the Nartuby River. We are in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Most of the route is through woodland.

An easy family walk between sun and shade (between the south-facing and north-facing slopes, in fact), with lovely views of the sea on the south-facing slope and the coolness of the forest on the way back.

A beautiful circular loop for admiring the Gorges du Verdon in a more intimate way and from different viewpoints. Sumptuous panoramic views of the Grand Canyon and Colle de Breïs and, of course, Point Sublime. A challenging route, well suited to trail runners: it climbs for most of the route but with a reasonable gradient. Then comes a short but fairly steep descent, which proved less difficult than it looked.

Overlooking the village of Rougon and located at an altitude of over 1,200 metres, the Plateau du Suech offers beautiful panoramic views where, with a little luck, you can admire the griffon vultures of the Verdon.

A beautiful walk up the Verdon by its bed ! A feast for the eyes from start to finish ! ⚠️The Sentier Martel is not very difficult for regular walkers, but you have to be careful. However, the trickiest part is the Imbert ladders (6 ladders, 252 steps), which are difficult for hikers prone to vertigo. The difference in altitude is overestimated. A magnificent hike overlooking the Verdon. Very little traffic.

The shepherds of Provence offer us wonders along this short hike: the drystone shelters and their exceptional architecture. The Seillan drystone shelters were built between the18th and19th centuries, a period when land clearing and cultivation developed. The hills were then all cultivated in terraces, restanques and banquettes where chickpeas, wheat, barley, vines, olive trees and fruit trees grew. These huts provided shelter for farmers and their tools. Shaped like igloos, they maintain the same temperature in summer and winter, providing good protection against the heat or the mistral wind. Why are there so many drystone shelters in Seillans (more than 80!) and so few in neighbouring villages? It remains a mystery!

Through Castellane and along shaded paths, visit the famous and renowned Notre Dame du Roc.

This route offers remarkable views of the village of La Palud and the surrounding mountains, as well as the Grand Canyon. It is the only trail that provides access to the highest viewpoint above the Gorges du Verdon.

Circular starting from the village of Chasteuil in the commune of Castellane. There is a steep climb before reaching the summit of Pré Chauvin with its 360° view. Descent from the Pas du Loup ridge towards Les Cadières. Towering over the Verdon at over 1,545 m, the cliffs of Les Cadières de Brandis dominate the landscape. (Cadiero comes from the Occitan language and means chair, and Cadières de Brandis could be translated as Wobbly Chairs).

A short walk to the abandoned village of Châteauneuf-les-Moustiers, ideal for a picnic with panoramic views of the Montdenier massif, the heights of the Verdon or the Mourres area. Châteauneuf-les-Moustiers was abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century. The remaining ruins are impressive in size and number.

A hike in Pays du Verdon that takes ancient Roman roads, runs alongside an abandoned village and a chapel sheltered by rocks with magnificent landscapes.

A very pleasant walk through the heart of the Royal Forest, with its downy oaks, cork oaks and hornbeams. Several species of birds can be observed, including woodcocks and kingfishers. During the hike, you will enjoy magnificent views of Lake Méaulx. The inhabitants of Saint-Paul, steeped in a strong forestry culture, have always known how to draw resources from this forest: timber for building houses and ships, acorns for feeding pigs, wood for heating and fuelling lime kilns and craft kilns, particularly for firing tiles and glassware. From the16th century onwards, the Royal Navy consumed large quantities of timber for its ships. Today, the Royal Forest is no longer exploited, but with its downy oaks, cork oaks and hornbeams, it is a very pleasant place to walk.

Between the Maures mountains and the forests of Fayence, Seillans and Saint-Paul-en-Fôret, this hike takes you to the 11-hectare Lac de Meaulx in a densely wooded and green environment. The Riou de Méaulx hillside reservoir was built by the Syndicat Intercommunal pour l'Aménagement du Cours Supérieur de l'Endre (Intercommunal Association for the Development of the Upper Endre River). Lac de Méaulx, straddling the municipalities of Saint-Paul-en-Forêt, Seillans and Fayence, was filled with water in December 1981. The reservoir has a capacity of 900,000 m3 and a surface area of 16 hectares. Its maximum length is 1 km and the dam is 20 metres high. The lake was used as a support area for forest fire defence. Following damage, it was emptied in October 2006. Currently owned by the Community of Municipalities, it was refilled in early 2017 after renovation work.

This hike on the edge of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence offers a varied route through forests, rocky outcrops and even a riverbed. It is not particularly difficult, although some descents can be a little steep. It also gives you the opportunity to visit the pretty Saint-Pierre Chapel, tucked away in the woods.
