The Bargème Mill and the Artuby

A lovely walk from Bargème and its castle to the banks of the Artuby with its turquoise waters. You will enjoy splendid views of the surrounding area as far as Mont Coudon. Part of the walk is in the sun (take care in summer) and part is in the woods (very pleasant).

Description of the walk

Park below the village near the cemetery.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head north-west along the D37 road, Chemin de Pontevès. You will come to a hairpin bend in the road.

(1) Continue along the path through the woods, Chemin de Saint-Laurent, until you reach a fork.

(2) Turn left onto Chemin de Saint-Laurent and you will arrive at the Saint-Laurent Chapel

(3) After the chapel, ignore the access to the hamlet of Saint-Laurent on the right and continue along a path that descends towards the fields and joins a fork.

(4) Turn right at the (very) small sign for GR®49. Walk along a field.

(5) Shortly after entering the woods, at the first fork, descend to the left. Follow the downhill path, which is narrow in places, to the ruins of the Moulin de Bargème.

(6) Take the opportunity to stop for a break 100 metres away at the picnic area on the banks of the Artuby. Then retrace your steps (a beautiful climb from the banks of the Artuby to the edge of the woods) back to the picnic area.

(1) Turn left, pass in front of the Notre-Dame des Sept Douleurs Chapel and continue straight on to the castle ruins. Stroll through the village. Return to the car park (S/E).

Easy hike to follow. In rainy weather, the terrain can be slippery.
The fact that it is a round trip is not a problem at all, as it allows you to enjoy different beautiful views depending on the direction.
We extended the hike by a few metres to enjoy the bridge over the Artuby.

Right now it must be very pleasant: nice weather and not too hot.

A very beautiful walk to the banks of the Artuby.
I agree with the previous review: it would be a shame not to continue the hike for another ten minutes or so to reach the 17th-18th century stone bridge at the entrance to the Clue de St Laurent. Be careful not to miss the path on the left of the track that joins the riverbank at the top of a small hill.

Thank you for this review. Indeed, I have not explored the gorge area.

A beautiful hike indeed; it's a shame not to continue a few hundred metres further to reach the St Laurent Gorge Bridge, a historic landmark between the towns of Bargeme and Trigance, and admire the river as it flows into a gorge....
