Description of the walk

Park in the Tourist Office car park at the entrance to the village of Trigance.

(S/E) Walk up the street that passes in front of the wash house and Rue du Four to the small square where you will find a bakery and a snack bar. Go round the fountain and head left up Rue du Puits. Cross the tarmac road and take the path opposite, signposted with GR®49 (red/white) and PR® (yellow) markings. You will then reach the junction where the GR® and PR® paths split.

(1) Turn left to stay on the GR®, reaching a junction marked by a sign.

(2) Take the path on the left, passing beneath the ridge of the Serrière du Preil before crossing the ridge linking the Sommet de Breis and the Cime de Biach. Continue slightly uphill until you reach the hamlet of Entreverges.

(3) Go round it to the east by following the path that branches off to the right, still following the dual GR®49 / PR® Yellow markings, then join the PR® junction.

(4) Keep left on the GR®, descending a fairly steep slope, and you will soon come to another junction.

(5) Leave the GR® here and take the path on the left. Begin a descent, heading west, to the Rancoumas viewpoint.

(6) Return in the opposite direction to the PR® junction.

(4) Leave the GR® and head straight on along the yellow-marked PR®. Continue uphill for about a hundred metres, then begin the descent, which is easy and mostly over open ground. Follow the path along the edge of the ridge to reach the Casseyères ridge.

(7) Turn right, then take a hairpin bend to the right and continue the descent to return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Retrace your steps along the route taken on the way out to return to the Trigance car park (S/E).

Notes

(6) Rancoumas viewpoint: this viewpoint, well protected from the void by a stone guardrail, offers a view of the Verdon below in all the splendour of its gorges (photo). Flat areas allow for comfortable picnicking.

Worth a visit

(S/E): the old village of Trigance is worth a visit for its typical narrow streets, notably with its well in the middle of the street of the same name (photo).
See also the remarkable castle, a 11th-century fortress converted into a luxury hotel and restaurant.
Between (1) and (2): several remarkable Provençal wells (photo).

A superb circular loop! Varied landscapes typical of the Pre-Alps, ranging from woodland to more rocky terrain. Incredible views over the Verdon from the Rancoumas viewpoint. No vultures to be seen that day – bad luck. A gentle, unchallenging climb from points 1 to 3, becoming steeper on the return from the viewpoint. Note a small error in the description: at point 5, you don’t start a climb towards the viewpoint, but a descent. Which you’ll then have to climb back up Many thanks to the hiker who posted this route; I thoroughly enjoyed it.
