Rougon via the bridges of Carajuan, Sautet and Tusset, passing through Trigance

A beautiful circular loop for admiring the Gorges du Verdon in a more intimate way and from different viewpoints. Sumptuous panoramic views of the Grand Canyon and Colle de Breïs and, of course, Point Sublime. A challenging route, well suited to trail runners: it climbs for most of the route but with a reasonable gradient. Then comes a short but fairly steep descent, which proved less difficult than it looked.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the car park when you arrive in Rougon via Point Sublime. There are two car parks available before you enter the village: the first is before the chapel (mainly occupied by vans and motorhomes) and the second is about 50 metres after the chapel. Please note: do not drive into the village as the car park there is reserved for residents.

(S/E) Head towards the village via Rue de la Fontaine. Follow the signs for "Pont de Carajuan" displayed at the entrance to Rougon. You will arrive at a small square with a crêperie on your right (no entry road).

(1) Follow a wide white path that climbs gently (Chemin d'Enc), marked in yellow. Don't miss the view on the right of the Canyon and the Verdon Regional Park! After 900 metres, the path begins to climb gently but is not difficult. The start of the hike is somewhat sheltered from the sun, surrounded by thyme, savory and rosemary plants. You will come to a fork in the path after the Ravin d'Ouadès.

(2) Continue straight ahead towards "Pont de Carajuan" and leave the main trail on your left, descending straight ahead on the narrower path marked with yellow signs. Continuing straight ahead, the yellow cross indicates the end of the marked trail, but you will rejoin it a few hundred metres further on. The descent is on a track formed by flat stones, which can be slippery in wet weather. Once you rejoin the marked trail, the track becomes a path with white pebbles, which winds gently downhill in hairpin bends, perfect for runners. Cross a pine forest which provides some shade, much appreciated in hot weather. Come out onto the D952, cross carefully and then turn right, following the road.

(3) Turn left to cross the bridge towards "Pont de Sautet" and "Trigance", following the yellow markings. When you reach an intersection, keep left on the trail, which begins a slight climb with alternating shaded and open sections. You will reach another fork in the trail.

(4)Turn left to reach Pont de Sautet 300 metres further on. In September, the stream was dry, but this area is very pretty and must be even more so when the pools are full of water.

(5) Retrace your steps.

(4)Take the marked path on the left;this section is not shaded. Join another path.

(6) Continue straight ahead, following the signs for "Combaou des Breïs". You will come to another fork in the path. Follow the clearly visible cairn that indicates the path on the right, a sort of flat stone path. Leave the original path on your left and continue to follow the yellow markings. You will soon come to a tarmac road at a hairpin bend.

(7) Follow this road uphill, continuing straight ahead until you reach the entrance to Trigance. Continue straight ahead, passing the entrance to the castle on your right. You will come to a small square with a fountain (where you can take a break at the local bar).

(8) Take the street on the right, then the stairs on the right to reach another street. Follow this street to the left until you reach a crossroads.

(9) Continue straight ahead on the path marked in yellow, which is also part of the GR®4, ignoring a path on the left.

(10) At the corner of a house, leave the GR®, which continues straight ahead, and turn right onto the narrower PR® towards "Tour de Breïs". At the top of a slight incline, you will reach a private path: take the stairs on the right (clearly markedwith yellow markings). The path is narrower with some vegetation, but it is clearly visible. Admire the Colle de Breïs straight ahead before entering a shady fir forest alternating with open areas. Enjoy the splendid view all along this path. After about 1.5 km of flat ground, the path begins to climb again under the trees: welcome relief! At the edge of the woods, you will come to a track.

(11) Take it on the left and continue climbing. After a few hundred metres, leave the wide path for a narrower trail that is still very well marked in yellow (PR®).

(12) Begin the descent on a small forest path for a few dozen metres before joining the GR®49 (red and white markings). Follow it to the right, descending to the next junction.

(13) Be careful not to miss the GR® which continues to the right and follow it, passing a spring along the way. Continue tothe Pont de Tusset bridge: you can go down to the riverbank to cool off on either side, but after the bridge is a more convenient place to take a break.

(14) Cross the bridge and continue on the GR®49, which climbs through the forest until it reaches Point Sublime. Follow the GR® towards "Point Sublime" and "Rougon". Cross a road and take the path opposite to join the GR®4 (also marked in red and white) at the Couloir Samson crossroads.

(15) Turn left and head to the Point Sublime viewpoint , a classic spot offering magnificent views of the Grand Canyon.

(16) Go back 150 metres and take the path on the left towards Rougon. Join the D952 at the roundabout.

(17) Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing towards Rougon and take the path on the right about 100 metres further on. A yellow sign indicates the direction of "Rougon" and the path climbs up to the village.

(18) Continue left, following the GR® trail to return to the car park (S/E), and don't forget to visit the chapel.

A brilliant hike because you pass through all sorts of landscapes: the Verdon, the forest, the mountains…
For me, the tricky bit of this hike was actually the very long descent towards the end of the route; without poles, it gets quite painful after a while!
The climbs are generally easier by comparison…
There are plenty of opportunities to refill your water bottles along the route (water from the Verdon, fountains, etc.)
Set off early to give yourself time to do it without rushing; it took us 7 hours and 40 minutes including breaks (to enjoy the Verdon, dip our feet in the water, etc.)…
