Clef des Annes, Lac Maroly and Lac de la Cour

A bucolic hike in the middle of a huge mountain pasture. The Maroli valley climbs gently to the sound of cowbells. At the top, the Crêt des Annes offers an exceptional view of the Aravis and the surrounding mountains, and the artificial lakes of Maroly and La Cour are also very charming.

Description of the walk

To get to the start, from Chinaillon, continue towards the Col de la Colombière and a few metres after thethird hairpin bend, park in the small car park on the left or at the start of the track on the right (around ten spaces).

(S/E) Take the track, Chemin des Bouts, and continue to the hamlet of the same name.

(1) At the three-way junction in the centre of the hamlet of Les Bouts, continue left. The track continues as a small tarmac road and joins the hamlet of Ferme Maroli. Go around it on the left to respect the residents. You will arrive at the foot of a ski lift.

(2) Turn left onto the path that climbs beneath it. After moving away from the ski lift, take a 90° left turn and then return beneath it. Turn right and continue climbing until you reach the ridge of La Clef des Annes.

(3) Continue right and follow the ridge to the Terres Rouges restaurant.

(4) Just after, turn left for a return trip to the orientation table with its exceptional view.

(4) On your return, continue left on the downhill track.

(5) At the small Col du Vacheret, turn right and ignore two paths on the left before reaching thethird fork.

(6) Turn left for a round trip to Lac du Malory and walk around it.

(7) After enjoying the spot, return to the previous fork (the path that starts next to the spillway is tempting but prohibited).

(6) On your return, continue left until the next fork.

(8) Ignore the left turn towards the snow factory building (no access) and head towards the hamlet of Ferme Maroli at the bottom of the valley.

(9) Just before this, take the descending track on the left, on the left bank of the Ruisseau des Bouts (not shown on the IGN map). Follow it to the Chalet de Maroly.

(10) Follow the track that branches off to the left almost horizontally, then take the first left. After a short climb, you will reach Lac de la Cour.

(11) After enjoying the spot, return to the fork at Chalet de Maroly.

(10) Continue left, passing between the buildings and over the bridge over the Ruisseau des Bouts. Walk alongside a farm on your right and you will reach the hamlet of Les Bouts.

(1) Continue left and return to the car park on the Route du Col de la Colombière (S/E).

Practical information

The route is poorly signposted but easy to follow with numerous signposts.
Stay on authorised paths. To preserve the ecosystem, do not cut across fields or take shortcuts.

The route is mostly on tracks suitable for vehicles, except between (2) and (4). This hike does not present any particular difficulties, even in wet weather.

The IGN map is incorrect between (8) and (10). The path marked on the map no longer exists from the snow factory onwards and the passage is prohibited.

An easy route with beautiful views of the mountains and valleys. However, the route is very monotonous and boring, as it follows a stony track suitable for vehicles, and the artificial lakes are of very little interest.

Did this complete route, in the direction indicated, in 4 hours 35 minutes, as estimated by Visorando author Denis26.
Very good for admiring the Aravis range up close. There's still plenty of snow and the mountain pastures are an enchanting shade of green.
I saw the famous Abondance cows, the chalets where Reblochon cheese is made, spring and Koch's gentians (blue), crocuses...
Just before the Terres Rouges restaurant, a brand new gondola lift has been installed; the track around it is still being finished, so the GPS route is slightly off. The route is on a wide track alternating between grass and stones. There are a few mountain bike sections.

A superb walk with panoramic views of the mountains and alpine pastures all along the way. Easy and well signposted. We didn't walk around both lakes. Set off early (9am) to avoid the crowds and find a parking space (there aren't many in the car park).
The path is wide and a little stony but easy to walk on. The arrival at the Clef des Annes is worth the detour.

Beautiful scenery but hiking mainly on stony roads, very few paths like we like in the mountains and two artificial lakes of little interest.

The first hour was a bit boring, but the view of the Aravis mountain range from the top was magnificent. The Restaurant des Terres Rouges was very good. It is possible to shorten the route by not going around the lakes.

A very beautiful hike with no difficulty and a variety of stages!

In May, it can be a little difficult to find your way around because of the snow.

Not to be missed if you're in the area!

Superb hike on 9 May 2024. There was still quite a lot of snow above 1,650 metres, but it was easy to get through as there were no steep sections and the hike is not dangerous.
The view of the Aravis massif and Pointe Percée is one of the most beautiful views in the Alps!
A must-do if you're in the area.

A very beautiful hike with magnificent views at the top of Les Annes. Perhaps best avoided in very hot weather, as there is no shade anywhere.

The route is very monotonous as you follow 4x4 tracks the whole way, and the lakes are artificial! However, the break at the La Clé des Ânes bistro with its view of the Aravis mountains is splendid!
