Grand Jumeau route and Petit Jumeau route

A lovely family walk along small forest paths, taking you to the two summits of the Grand and Petit Jumeau. The two routes can be done separately. Peaceful and shaded, this walk is an ideal choice for a stroll during the height of the summer heat. As an added bonus, there is a playground, a small pond and picnic tables in a magnificent clearing at the starting point.

Description of the walk

Access: on the N59, between Étival and Saint-Dié, take the ‘Rambervillers, Saint-Michel’ exit. Follow the D32 to Nompatelize and take the Route des Feignes (D82) on your left towards Sauceray. In the hamlet of Les Feignes, take Rue des Jumeaux on your right, after the electricity substation. After 150 m, turn onto the forest track on the right and drive to the clearing where you’ll find a car park, a small pond, a picnic area and a children’s play area.

(S/E) At the end of the car park, take the path on the left above the playground and the pond. Walk 200 m uphill to the Abri des Jumeaux, where you’ll find a large picnic table and a fountain on your left. You now have a choice of two routes.

(1) To follow the Grand Jumeau route, continue straight on, following the Yellow Ring markings. Soon, turn left.

(2) At the small Route des Jumeaux, continue left along it, pass a house and turn onto the small path on the left (Yellow Ring markings) which winds through the forest to the summit of the Grand Jumeau.

(3) Beautiful view from the summit of the Grand Jumeau. Continue along the Yellow Ring-marked path, which winds several times before returning to the Abri des Jumeaux.

(1) Continue the walk along the Petit Jumeau route by heading straight ahead, to the left of the chalet, following the Red Ring markings. Along this nature trail, you will come across information boards providing details and posing questions about the flora and fauna of the Vosges.

(4) Leave the forest track and take the narrower path on the left. Take the stone steps leading up to the right to reach the summit of the Petit Jumeau.

(5) The summit of the Petit Jumeau offers numerous views of the surrounding villages: Nompatelize to the north, La Salle and La Bourgonce to the west, Saint-Michel-sur-Meuse to the east and west, and Sauceray to the south-west.

For the return journey, look out for the Red Ring markings and follow the winding path down the western slope of the massif. You will reach the Pierre du Cheval (dolmen).

(4) Head down to the left, following the Red Ring markings.

(6) Take the forest track to the right and continue to the clearing, the starting point of the route (S/E).

I think it would be easier to give the starting address to put into the GPS.
There are lots of ticks (watch out for your dogs!).
Otherwise, the walk is pretty and original, and there's plenty of shade.

This route, which passes over two "pointy" peaks, is easier than it looks. The slopes are gentle and pose no difficulty. On the peaks, take care not to walk the route in the wrong direction, but thanks to the Visorando app, it’s easy to stay on the right track.

A lovely walk that took us 2½ hours, taking the time to explore the nature trail (as we’re keen walkers). Two lovely viewpoints. A pleasant forest, with plenty of shade on hot days, so it’s brilliant. Perfect for getting back into the swing of things! Our 9-year-old wanted more! (There are several picnic spots and play areas for children near the car park: they love it!). Ultimately, you follow the yellow circle for the Grand Jumeau and the red circle for the Petit Jumeau. Very well signposted. Thanks to the Club Vosgien des Portes des Vosges for their daily work and to the publisher Visorando.

A pleasant route through the woods. The path is a bit narrow in places. The views from the summits are somewhat obscured by trees, particularly at Le Petit Jumeau. Take care: there is a sheer drop from the summit of Le Petit Jumeau, which is unprotected.
