Description of the walk

Start: Car park of the Auberge de la Cholotte, Les Rouges-Eaux

(S/E) From the car park, with your back to the inn, enter the forest and take the path ascending to the left. A sign indicates the direction of La Roche Belle-Jambe. The slope is steep but the distance is short.

(1) When you reach a forest path, take it to the left. La Roche Belle-Jambe, on your right, will amaze you with its fine pink sandstone, caves and pillar. Continue on and you will soon come to the first houses of Les Rouges-Eaux.

(2) At the intersection marked Scierie Catiche (no longer there), continue straight ahead. You will soon walk along a high embankment reinforced with large granite blocks, then turn left in front of the last house. Cross over the Mortagne river.

(3) A short distance away, you will come to a tarmac road, which you should cross immediately. Take the time to look to your right at the Grande Cheminée (the name given to this factory ruin, which is unusual in that it has a square cross-section).

(4) Start the climb. Enjoy some beautiful views: the village church tower, the valley towards Saint-Dié.

(5) Turn left and continue along the flat Route Forestière de la Basse du Jéal for 2.5 km. Enjoy this pleasant and relaxing path as you admire the magnificent fir trees and small openings onto the houses in the valley, including our starting point. For those in the know, there are many animal tracks in the sand, mainly deer.

(6) At this intersection, turn left down a slope that will take you to a paved road. Towards the bottom of the slope, you will notice a magnificent isolated fir tree, about 40 metres high.

(7) Take this road to the left and you will soon come to the first houses. A hundred metres further on, turn right (Auberge de la Cholotte) to return to your car park (S/E).

Notes

To reach the starting point by car from Bruyères: head towards Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, pass through Brouvelieures, Neuf Moulin and Bois de Champ. 1.5 km after leaving this village, turn right and follow the signs for the Auberge de la Cholotte, which is 1 km away. Use the car park.

Follow the green circle markers.

Worth a visit

The hike starts in the car park of an inn and restaurant, where you can stop for a bite to eat before or after your walk.

Halfway along the route, on the Basse du Jéal forest road, the sandy ground is marked with numerous animal tracks, mainly from roe deer.

A relaxing walk; there was no one else on the route as it was in February. Well signposted, with a few hills but easy to manage; the description of the walk matches the reality perfectly.

Easy hike, ideal with a waterfall trolley (similar to a joelette). Pleasant in hot weather as most of the route is shaded.

The rock formation known as "la belle jambe" (the beautiful leg) and the old chimney are worth exploring. One regret: there aren't many viewpoints, but it's a beautiful, not too difficult walk in the forest.

A lovely walk that is easily accessible for families as it mainly follows forest trails, except for a short 5-minute climb from the Auberge de la Cholotte. The route is varied and takes you through a beautiful pine forest. The descriptions are very reliable.

A very pleasant, easy family walk, well signposted. We were greeted by the friendly dogs at the Auberge de la Cholotte when we arrived. There were donkeys in the meadow along the way, which the children loved. Goats and horses at the end. Wide paths. We only came across one other group of four people and we were the only ones parked in the car park.
