Start: Car park of the Auberge de la Cholotte, Les Rouges-Eaux
(S/E) From the car park, with your back to the inn, enter the forest and take the path ascending to the left. A sign indicates the direction of La Roche Belle-Jambe. The slope is steep but the distance is short.
(1) When you reach a forest path, take it to the left. La Roche Belle-Jambe, on your right, will amaze you with its fine pink sandstone, caves and pillar. Continue on and you will soon come to the first houses of Les Rouges-Eaux.
(2) At the intersection marked Scierie Catiche (no longer there), continue straight ahead. You will soon walk along a high embankment reinforced with large granite blocks, then turn left in front of the last house. Cross over the Mortagne river.
(3) A short distance away, you will come to a tarmac road, which you should cross immediately. Take the time to look to your right at the Grande Cheminée (the name given to this factory ruin, which is unusual in that it has a square cross-section).
(4) Start the climb. Enjoy some beautiful views: the village church tower, the valley towards Saint-Dié.
(5) Turn left and continue along the flat Route Forestière de la Basse du Jéal for 2.5 km. Enjoy this pleasant and relaxing path as you admire the magnificent fir trees and small openings onto the houses in the valley, including our starting point. For those in the know, there are many animal tracks in the sand, mainly deer.
(6) At this intersection, turn left down a slope that will take you to a paved road. Towards the bottom of the slope, you will notice a magnificent isolated fir tree, about 40 metres high.
(7) Take this road to the left and you will soon come to the first houses. A hundred metres further on, turn right (Auberge de la Cholotte) to return to your car park (S/E).
