Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Saint-Dié-des-Vosges station.

(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards the station. Walk past it, turn right onto Rue de Périchamp and then go under the bridge that crosses the railway tracks.

(1) Take the stairs on the left to go up and cross the Pont Jacques Chirac bridge. Turn right onto Rue du Petit Saint-Dié: you will see the beautiful Clémenceau nursery school building.

(2) Leave Rue de l'Hermitage (return) on your left and continue along the street opposite, which runs alongside the railway tracks, following the Club Vosgien markings: green rectangle GR®533 and yellow diamond.

(3) At the fourth crossroads, turn left onto Rue Déodat to reach the Fontaines Saint-Martin and the Chapelle Saint-Déodat. This chapel, also known as the Chapelle du Petit Saint-Dié, is only open to the public on rare occasions.

(4) Retrace your steps.

(3) Continue the route by turning left, then left again at the next street, Rue Louis Burlin, while continuing to follow the GR®533 towards Les Roches-Saint-Martin. The paved street is lined with beautiful lime trees and leads to the Chartreuse underpass.

(5) Pass under the RN59 to reach the Carrefour de la Chartreuse (parking available). Turn left onto the Anneau Bleu path, which goes around the Kemberg Massif, then quickly turn right onto a GRP® trail marked with yellow crosses, and follow it until you reach Les Roches Saint-Martin, where you can climb to the top of the rock via stairs and metal footbridges: geodetic marker, beautiful view of the town of Saint-Dié leaning against the Ormont (antenna).

(6) Turn back and descend to the right on the GR®533 to reach the Col des Roches Saint-Martin: picnic tables and shelter.

(7) Continue straight ahead, still on the GR®533, towards La Roche d'Anozel. Turn left about 200 m further on, pass La Ronde Tête and its old quarry, then follow a pretty path on the right that climbs gently to the Kiosque take-off area: view of La Bolle at the foot of the Massif de la Madeleine and the Meurthe valley.

(8) Continue straight ahead on the GR® to quickly reach La Roche du Kiosque, a small rock accessible by a metal staircase: panoramic view.

(9) Continue along a beautiful ridge trail, following the green rectangle and yellow diamond markings towards Roche d'Anozel. Pass through Col de la Tête Ronde to reach the Pierre Percée junction.

(10) Take the path on the right to reach this rock, go around it following the red triangle markings. Be careful, the descent is a little steep. But this little detour is worth it as it gives you an overview of the rock formation and helps you understand why it is named as such.

(11) Return to the GR®.

(10) Continue to the right (south) towards Roche d'Anozel, following the green rectangle and yellow diamond markings. Reach Roche du Champignon, the highest point of the hike at an altitude of 732 metres.

(12) Continue to follow the GR®, passing in front of a take-off ramp with a view of the Val de Meurthe sand pits and, in the distance, the Grande Crête Vosgienne. Then pass through a nameless pass and arrive at Roche d'Anozel.

(13) Make a short but slightly steep descent on the forest path, then turn right and follow the yellow triangle markings to Censes de Grandrupt.

(14) Turn left at the hairpin bend to follow the yellow triangle and reach the water source.

(15) From there, continue left on the yellow cross trail towards La Roche de l'Enclume.

(16) Continue straight ahead on the yellow cross trail until you reach the fork at the picnic table.

(17) Keep left on the yellow cross trail, which climbs towards Roche de l'Enclume via Fer à Cheval. You will reach a three-way junction in the trail.

(18) Take the Croix Jaune trail on the left, which climbs gently to Roche de l'Enclume.

(19) Go back a little and rejoin the route on the right, following the sign for "Saint-Dié par Maison Forestière". After about 100 metres, turn right onto a steep path marked with a yellow triangle. At the crossroads, follow the red triangle until you reach the Fontaine du Sapin qui Pisse fountain in Fond de Foucharupt.

(20) Follow the blue ring trail on the left, which remains level until it reaches the forest road and a car park. Turn right and, after 100 metres, take the unmarked trail that descends to the left: signposted "Saint-Dié via the Tunnel". You will arrive at the Théâtre de Verdure tunnel.

(21) Go through the tunnel, then continue left down Avenue du Théâtre de Verdure, which becomes Rue de l'Hermitage when you reach the first houses.

(22) Continue straight ahead along this street, lined on the right with beautiful early 20th-century residences. On the left, you can see the Château de Saint-Dié, which has been converted into residences.

(2) Take the street on the right and follow the route in reverse to return to the station car park (S/E).

Notes

  • There is only one picnic shelter on the route, at Col des Roches Saint-Martin (7). Too close to the start! When descending from Roche de l'Enclume towards the Trois Fauteuils car park, there is a nice shelter (Abri Paul Zing) and you can join the flat path towards the Fontaine du Sapin qui Pisse, which is often dry (!).
  • Bring enough to drink, as water sources are unpredictable.
  • The descent to the fountain (TRR) can be slippery in wet weather, as can access to the various rocks.
  • The trails, which are very well maintained by volunteers from the Club Vosgien de Saint-Dié, are very pleasant and present no difficulty.
  • This hike can be done from one of the three car parks located on or near the route, carpooling if possible.

Worth a visit

  • (4) The Chapel of Saint-Déodat (often closed) and the Fountains of Saint-Martin are worth a detour at the start of the walk.
  • The main attraction of this hike is, of course, the passage through the five rocks of the Kemberg Massif, where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views.
  • If you have time, a short walk along Rue Gambetta and then Rue Thiers (opposite the station) will take you to Saint-Dié Cathedral and the quays of the Meurthe, where you can enjoy a refreshing glass of Sorcières beer (made with nettles), typical of the region, at one of the terrace bars.
