Start: Rue de la Mortagne in Moulin Neuf (Brouvelieures exit). A sign at the entrance to Rue de la Mortagne marks the start.
(S/E) Take Rue de Mortagne, which turns into a dirt track. After 200 m, you’ll reach the bridge over the Mortagne.
(S/E) 100 m further on, turn sharply right (two successive junctions) onto a flat path.
(2) Now, turn sharply left onto a fairly steep climb. At the first junction, continue up the slope to the right and pass the water reservoir for the village of Domfaing. You will see, below you, one of the last sawmills in the Mortagne valley. Continue on level ground for 400 m.
(3) Turn left onto a narrow path that leads you to the foot of the magnificent Contimpierre rock, a sandstone conglomerate rock with a natural cave. Read up on its legend.
(4) Continue along the slightly steep path until you reach a forest track, which you’ll take to the left. After 100 m, look out for a magnificent pine tree on your right, spared by the 1999 storm. The plateau you’re walking across was swept by that hurricane.
(5) At the next junction, take the most passable path – the one in the middle – and keep a close eye on the signposts. On your right, you will see patches of woodland with very sparse pine trees (a technique used for regeneration). After about 500 m, turn right at a 90° angle to begin a gentle descent. Fir trees replace the pines.
After 1 km, you’ll come to a wide open space. To your right, Brouvelieures; ahead of you, Domfaing and its bell tower on a hill. On the horizon, between the two villages, the hills overlooking Bruyères: the Avison and its mast, Pointhaie, and the Château.
(6) At the next junction, head down to the right, then, at the bottom, turn left towards Neuf Moulin, with the Mortagne river below.
(1) At the very next junction, turn right to rejoin the start of the walk immediately. Then, turning left, you will soon reach the Mortagne bridge and then your car (S/E).
