Cuzion route: from water to light

This hike allows you to discover the surroundings of the village of Cuzion, the Chéron moor, part of the Creuse gorges that you overlook at La Roche-Bat-en-l'eau, then you follow the river to the impressive Éguzon dam and its power station.
The return journey takes you to La Jarrige and its beautiful wash house, down to the mysterious Fontaine des Seigneurs, then up to the intriguing Château de Châteaubrun and the sculptures of its current owner.

Description of the walk

The starting point is at the church square. Follow the yellow markings.

(S/E) From behind the church, at the foot of the FFRP signpost, head north-east towards a small square and the cross, turn left into Rue du Moulin de Châteaubrun, then right into Chemin du Gorgeat, towards Les Cherons. Continue along the small road for about 2 km. At the entrance to Les Cherons, bear slightly left to walk alongside the boules court. At the stop sign, follow the road to the left.

(1) Turn left into Impasse de l'Engrand (GRP® Val de Creuse signpost). Follow the path down into the woods. At a crossroads, take the path on the left, following the GRP® and viewpoint signs (you can also make a 100 m round trip to Lande de Chéron opposite).
The path winds along the heights of the Creuse gorges and then descends to the Côtes Planes stream.

(2) After passing a wooden footbridge and a picnic area, the trail now runs along the edge of the Creuse. It then climbs back up to La Roche-Bat-en-l'eau, which overlooks Montcocu beach on the opposite bank.

(3) Descend and leave the Cassecou path (blue and green markings) on your left to continue along the Creuse and arrive at a lodge. Then continue along the small road.

(4) Then take a wide carriage road on the right that leads to picnic areas.

(5) At the crossroads, leave the bridge on your right and continue straight ahead towards the dam. Walk along a small reservoir at the foot of steep cliffs. Continue along the road until you reach the imposing Éguzon dam.

(6) Climb up a path on the left to a road on the right: this is the private access road that passes over the dam. Take the stairs on the left and climb up to a dead end, then continue straight ahead along a path.

(7) At the power station, turn left onto Rue de la Rivale, then right to cross the Champ de Roches area with its buildings for power station employees. Pass a street on your left, then turn right and go under the high-voltage power lines.

(8) At the next crossroads, turn left and after 60 metres, turn right onto Chemin du Champ de la Tire. Continue along the small road to La Jarrige, pass the first street on the right and, before the stop sign, cross the small square on the right towards the restored wash house.

(9) Follow the D72 westwards for 50 metres, crossing the D40c, and turn right onto Chemin des Varennes.

(10) At the three-way junction, take the wide path on the right, then turn left to go down Chemin du Pré Plot and reach the Fontaine des Seigneurs.

(11) Go up the path on the left to the D45, which you cross carefully to continue opposite. Follow the access road to Château de Châteaubrun on the left to admire the entrance and sculptures.

(12) Retrace your steps and continue along the lane until you reach the D45, which you take on the left.

(13) Just before a crossroads, turn left onto a path at the edge of the woods. Cross a meadow and take a grassy path lined with hedges. At the crossroads, go up to the right and follow a track suitable for vehicles to a place called La Peureyre. Take the street to the right of a small square, then right again. Turn left and continue along this street to the church (S/E).

We had already done another hike in the area that we really enjoyed, so we chose this one and we weren't disappointed. The area is lovely and the hike is just as good. It's well marked and not particularly difficult. The scenery is beautiful, although it's a shame you can't see much of Cuzion Castle, but it's a hike worth doing if you're in the area.

A very pleasant hike, between pastures and primeval forests, which provide a spectacular backdrop.

A very beautiful hike!

The section along the Creuse river is very pretty.
The dam, seen from below and then from above, is very interesting.
The castle is very beautiful. (Work was in progress and the gate was open, so we ventured a little way into the courtyard.

The fact that the hike is fully signposted is very convenient.

A very enjoyable hike, both in terms of the variety of trails and points of interest. Well marked and with clear explanations so you don't get lost. Only one section can be tricky if it rains (just before the small footbridge) and caution is advised with children on the sections above the Creuse. Otherwise, I found it an easy and very beautiful route. Thank you, Visorando 👍
