Family walk around Éguzon-Chantôme

Having grown up in Éguzon until I was ten before moving to Limoges, I still have fond memories of my escapades along the sunken lanes of this village in the former Marche region. In the realm of chestnut trees, ferns and Limousin cattle, let yourself wander, loiter and stroll through the bocage of dry stone walls and hollow-trunked trees. Try your hand at hunting the dahut as night falls. Rediscover your inner child by taking your time and letting your calves do the walking

Description of the walk

Park at Place de la République in the car park next to Saint-Étienne Church.

(S/E) Leave the square and take Rue du Lieutenant Olive on the left, then immediately turn right onto Rue de la Poste and, 30 m further on, turn left onto Rue des Chaillots.

(1) At the junction, take Route du Lac on the left, proceeding with caution until the first bend.

(2) Leave the road and take a path downhill to the right (not shown on the IGN map). Join Route du Lac at the Lavaud bridge.

(3) Cross the bridge carefully and turn onto the track on the right immediately afterwards (the track is only partially marked on the IGN map). Pass under a power line and join a road.

(4) Take the path uphill to the left until you reach the next road (D36d).

(5) First turn right then left (road/path). Pass two turnings on the left then another on the right. Reach the road and cross it carefully to take the path opposite until you reach a junction.

(6) Turn onto the path on the right, pass a path on the right and continue to the village of Bougazeau.

(7) At the T-junction, turn left, then, 70 m further on, turn onto the path on the right. Follow it until you cross the D36d with care and continue along the path opposite. Pass a turn-off on the left and continue slightly downhill to the next path on the left. Take this to the D913.

(8) Take the road on the left with care, then, 30 m further on, turn onto the path going uphill to the right. Follow it (path then road) to Séjallas. Pass the hamlet and, at a sharp bend to the right, leave the road for the path opposite. Continue along it for about 600 m.

(9) At the T-junction, turn right, then, after about a hundred metres, turn right onto the road. Follow it carefully untilthe second path on the left. Follow this until the entrance to Éguzon-Chantôme (path and Pouzat district).

(10) Take the D45 on the right with care, then very quickly the D913 on the left. Cross Éguzon-Chantôme to the Place de la République (S/E) via Rue Raymond Lagoutte and then Rue Camille Toussaints.

Notes

The route partly follows other paths
The section between points (5) and (6) may be muddy. The first part of the path after point (8) may also be muddy.
The path near Éguzon after point (10) is regularly used by motorbikes, quad bikes and horses. During the rainy season, it can resemble a gentle little stream.
1.6 km of minor roads.

Worth a visit

The Éguzon war memorial. Sculptor: Ernest Nivet.
The 17th-century Château de la Clavière (private).
Lavaud Bridge: you will see no sign of human presence along the banks of the Clavière stream, but bear in mind that the site was already inhabited during the Lower Pleistocene (1.1 million years ago).
The mine at Poitou: a former graphite mine.

A very pleasant hike with almost entirely footpaths. So that's pretty great because unfortunately there are often long stretches of tarmac
Beautiful autumn colours, but autumnal weather too, so we had some heavy rain, but no matter! That's what rain capes are for!
As a bonus, we picked up chestnuts along the way.

Ah, spring 2023 looks set to be a wet one, but the water tables won’t be complaining.

A lovely walk. Do remember to look back now and then to take in the views.
In wet weather, the river spills onto the paths.

Thank you for your comments. I’m correcting the error in point 9, which neither Visorando nor I had spotted.

A lovely route: varied and pleasant scenery and terrain.
Very clear description. Impossible to get lost.
Except in one place: at point 9, you need to take the second path on the left. The first leads to a water extraction point and ends in a dead end.
