Description of the walk

Departure from the old station on Rue Peri Brosselette (parking spaces).

(S/E) With your back to the street, continue straight ahead on the path and pass in front of the pigsty to reach a fork.

(1) Turn right and continue straight on to Ablain-Saint-Nazaire and Rue Marcel Lancino.

(2) Turn left into the street, pass an intersection, then take the path on the left between numbers 41 and 43. Continue straight ahead until you reach a fork.

(3) Turn left, then take the third right onto Rue d'Arras. At the end, turn left and continue straight ahead until you reach a fork.

(4) Turn right twice, continue straight ahead, cross the street and go opposite. Continue straight ahead again to reach the sports field.

(5) Turn right, then left at the Y-junction and follow the Souchez to the fourth crossroads.

(6) Turn left, then left again and walk past the old church.

(7) Turn right onto Rue de Lens and continue straight ahead until you reach a fork near a power line.

(8) Turn right and head towards the old station (S/E) by first turning left then right.

During this walk, you'll enter a beautiful region that was devastated by the 1st World War. More than 180,000 people lost their lives during the Battle of Artois, which began in May-June 1915. This walk starts at the edge of a cemetery where 44,000 soldiers of all origins are buried. Many more are, and will remain, buried forever beneath the beautiful landscapes you're about to cross.

This walk pays tribute to Doctor Ablin Hernu, born in 1849 in Divion and died in 1920. He was the seventh of 10 children. His work covered an area stretching from Arras in the south to Aire-sur-la-Lys in the north and from Béthune in the east to Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise in the west. He was a medical officer during the 1870 war, when he studied medicine. He would walk the 40 km from Divion to Arras.
