The Canadian Vimy Memorial, starting from Souchez

Starting from Place de Souchez, you’ll reach the Canadian memorial.
The Battle of Vimy took place in April 1917.
From the start of the war, the Germans held the heights of Vimy and the entire mining basin.
After numerous unsuccessful attempts by the French and British to recapture these positions, it was the Canadians who drove them back, at the cost of 11,000 dead in their ranks.

Apart from the 'urban' end of the route, this circular is very interesting: Vimy Forest, Givenchy Woods, monuments and places steeped in history make this hike well worth recommending.

This is a lovely route to do on a hot day, as most of the route is shaded (except for the end, after point 14).
The route description is very accurate, EXCEPT between points 12 and 13 (towards the end) where you practically need to use
from your phone’s GPS (for example, we use the Adidas Running app, which is very handy for seeing where you are and where you’re heading).
A word of warning to dog owners: avoid point 7; turn off before it to rejoin the D55E2 road, as access to the trenches is prohibited for our four-legged friends.
Same goes for the end of the Route forestière du Train de Loos, but we’re only warned at the last minute! We went through there anyway to reach point 10...
Some good news: in Givenchy we were able to have a picnic in the shade, near a playground, and buy two glasses of cold beer in a bar-café almost opposite – a real, unexpected treat in this hot weather!
There you go, enjoy the walk!!!

I combined this route with the "Au pied de Pichonvalles" route, starting from Givenchy (two circular routes, 10 + 12 km, with a picnic spot to the right of the church) to avoid Souchez and the motorway. It makes for a lovely walk with beautiful scenery and places of historical significance.

A wonderful walk! Lots of lovely, shady woodland. The paths were fairly easy to walk on despite the mud – a real gem!
