Circular via Les Eyzies and Peyzac-le-Moustier

Circular cycle route loop no. 6 starting from Les Eyzies.

A circular route that will take your breath away! This challenging circular route takes you through unspoilt countryside and past numerous historical sites. Between gentle climbs and exhilarating descents, you will pass the Moustier archaeological site and La Roque Saint-Christophe, in the heart of the Périgord Noir. Not to be missed!

Description of the route

Departure from the Les Eyzies motorhome area.

(S/E) Go up the river (against the current). At the stop sign, turn left onto the footbridge (on the pedestrian side: dismount your bicycle).

(1) At the end of the footbridge, make a sharp left turn to rejoin the greenway and continue to the end. After Pecheyrou, continue left on the greenway until you reach the crossing shared with cars, separated by wooden logs.

(2) After the crossing, do not rejoin the greenway, but stay left on the Route du Sorcier until you reach the stop sign.

(3) Turn left towards Campagne and Route du Coux, cross the bridge over the Vézère and arrive at a crossroads.

(4) Follow the D703 on the right towards Coux/Belvès. Continue to the hamlet at the top of the hill, then continue straight ahead to Route de Bigaroque.

(5) Go down this road on the right, continue to Les Valades and Chemin de Ladière.

(6) Turn right at the bottom, keep left to reach Route du Château de Labatut.

(7) Turn left and you will soon reach the fork with Route de Labatut. Follow it to the right, towards Audrix, until you reach the end of Route de Proumeyssac.

(8) Turn left towards Audrix.

(9) Turn left towards the church, then turn right towards Saint-Chamassy. You will reach a fork in the road.

(10) At the stop sign, take the C1 on the right towards Saint-Chamassy and reach Route de Falgueyrat.

(11) At the stop sign, turn left towards Le Bugue. Follow the road until you reach the give way sign on Route du Buisson.

(12) Turn left, then you will soon reach the junction with Route du Pont de Ferrand. Turn right and continue to the stop sign on Route du Mouscard.

(13) Turn left until you pass the bridge over the Vézère and arrive at the give way sign.

(14) Turn right towards Le Bugue. Follow the road until you reach the give way sign on Rue du Cingle.

(15) Turn right towards Le Bugue and the stop sign at the end of the street, onto Route de Bara-Bahau.

(16) Turn left between the SDIS and the Hôtel du Cygne onto Route de Bara-Bahau. Pass the hamlet of Canteyrat, then Maine. After the second hamlet, continue straight on until the sixth crossroads with Route de Vialard.

(17) Turn right and continue to Saint-Avit-de-Vialard and Route du Camping.

(18) At the give way sign, turn left. After the forest, you will reach a fork with Route des Feuillardiers.

(19) Turn right towards Journiac. Follow this road until you reach Route des Cinq Moulins, located after the bridge.

(20) Turn left and cross the village of Journiac to reach Route de la Croix de Pierre.

(21) At the Croix de Pierre, turn right towards Mauzens-et-Miremont (cycle route). Continue to the Route des Landettes, located at the end of the road.

(22) At the give way sign, turn right, then reach a stop sign on the D710.

(23) Continue straight ahead towards Mauzens-et-Miremont. Continue on this road until you reach the viaduct.

(24) Pass under the viaduct and turn left towards Périgueux/Rouffignac, then quickly right onto Route de la Grotte de Miremont.

(25) Turn right towards Rouffignac. Stay on the road until you reach the car garage.

(26) Turn right after the garage to reach the D31.

(27) Turn right onto the departmental road and follow this road until you reach a cross and a picnic area.

(28) Turn left towards Tursac onto Route du Moulin du Peuch. Continue until you reach Route du Louvetier.

(29) Turn left towards Le Moustier. Continue along the ridge until you reach a fork with woods on the left.

(30) Go down the road to the second Y-junction.

(31) Continue left on Route du Moulin du Peuch. Go to the end of Route-Abri du Mousterien.

(32) At the end of the road, turn right towards Le Moustier, Route de Sous le Roc.

(33) At the stop sign, turn right towards Les Eyzies and cross the bridge over the Vézère to reach Route de la Préhistoire, just after. Follow it to the left towards Peyzac.

(34) After the sign for the village of Peyzac-le-Moustier, turn right (hairpin bend) towards Les Eyzies (cycle route) on Route des Biquettes. At the end, join the D65.

(35) Turn right towards Sarlat/Les Eyzies and continue to the stop sign and the Route de la Crête.

(36) Continue straight ahead and you will soon reach a fork on Route de l'Estrade. Follow it downhill to the right and stay on the road until you reach the stop sign on Route de la Vallée.

(37) Turn left and continue to Les Eyzies, a bakery and Rue du Moulin.

(38) Turn right, pass in front of the museum and join Avenue de la Préhistoire on the right. Turn right onto Rue du Marché andturn left towards the Vézère car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(S/E) Prehistory Interpretation Centre, National Museum of Prehistory.

(3) Turn right after the bridge to reach the Grand Roc cave and the prehistoric shelters of Laugerie Basse (1.2 km).

(9) Continue straight ahead to visit the Proumeyssac chasm (1.5 km).

(14) At the bridge on the left, visit the village of Limeuil, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, as well as its Panoramic Gardens.

(16) Univerland Le Bugue,Le Parc du Bournat (650 m).

Between (16) and (17) Bara Bahau Cave.

Before (33) in the village of Le Moustier: Le Moustier archaeological site.
