Circular route between the Col du Neuland and Eguisheim via the Trois Châteaux

The foothills of the Hautes Vosges are also a great place for lovely hikes. This route starts at the Col du Neuland and is circular, looping back to Eguisheim. The first section is entirely through woodland. It takes you past Notre-Dame du Schauenberg, the Rocher du Coucou and the Gueberschwihr quarries. The route then passes through Husseren-les-Châteaux before climbing towards the Trois Châteaux d’Eguisheim. The rest of the route follows a botanical trail before winding down towards the ruins of Hagueneck. After the castle, the rest of the route is entirely open country and passes through the outskirts of the village of Eguisheim, then the villages of Obermorschwihr, Gueberschwihr and Pfaffenheim, before climbing back up to the Col du Neuland.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park at Col du Neuland.

No signposting

(S/E) At the cross on the right, continue along the road towards Pfaffenheim.

Red Cross markings

At the cross, turn left and then leave the track on the right. At the edge of the forest, continue straight ahead and then, at the next fork, turn left. Further on, pass a path on the right and then another coming at an acute angle from the same side. You will then reach a junction at Ruebenloch.

(1) Turn right then immediately left. At the edge of the woods, ignore a path branching off to the right, then at the T-junction, go straight ahead. At the next junction, turn left to stay on the same route (note: IGN maps are out of date at this point) and reach a track.

(2) Stay on the ascending path to pass in front of the Roche du Diable, then the Mont des Oliviers. Pass a fork in the path and arrive at the Notre-Dame de Schauenberg Chapel.

(3) Pass the chapel and its viewpoint and walk past the buildings. Continue along the track leading to the chapel and reach the car park, passing several sculptures and ignoring the various junctions.

Red Diamond markings

(4) Cross the car park, first turning right then left to rejoin the path. The path climbs slightly and reaches a fork.

Marking: Notable Rock

Turn right towards the Rocher du Coucou.

(5) Continue along the path, which soon reaches a fork.

Red Diamond markings

Head down to the right. At the track, go straight ahead. Here too, there is an error in the markings on the IGN maps. At the next track, cut across it and take the path opposite until you reach the road.

Blue Diamond markings

(6) Cross this and make the first turn right then left to take the path towards the quarries. Then ignore a path on the left to stay on the one that descends. Pass close to several quarries with impressive cliffs. You will then reach a junction.

(7) Turn left and walk past more quarries. Then ignore a small path branching off to the right. The IGN maps are completely out of date for this section. You must therefore follow the route. The path then begins to climb and passes other quarries with remarkable cliffs before reaching a fork.

Blue Diamond markings

(8) Take the path down to the right. It runs alongside a stream before crossing it. The path then offers a few views, crosses a scree slope and meets a private track. At the junction in the bend, turn right and reach the edge of the woods.

No markings

(9) Take the track furthest to the left.

Blue Circle markings

At the four-way fork, take the path that goes uphill. At the next fork, keep right, then turn right again at the following fork to reach the walls of the old abbey.

Red Diamond markings

(10) Turn left along the wall of the old abbey. At the next fork, stay along the wall until you reach another fork.

(11) Head straight ahead then keep left to enter Husseren-les-Châteaux via Rue de l’Abbaye de Marbach. At the junction, turn left onto Route des Cinq Châteaux then, at the first junction, turn right onto Rue du Schlossberg. Pass in front of the hotel, ignore a steeply ascending path on the left and reach a junction.

Red Disc markings

(12) Turn left, then right onto a path that winds its way up to the Three Castles of Eguisheim. At the junction, keep left, then at the next two junctions, turn right to reach the site of the three castles.

(13) Continue along the path opposite, which begins to descend. At the track at the bottom of the descent, turn right to reach the car park.

Yellow Disc markings

(14) Cross the car park and take the path. Then take the bend straight ahead. At the track, go straight ahead, then turn right onto the path which is almost level. You will then cross a wider track.

(15) Head left. At the next fork, go straight ahead and take a bend. Pass several information boards to reach a junction.

(16) Stay on the path which descends slightly to the right. Ignore a path leading uphill to the left and stay on the main track. Then ignore a path leading straight ahead, keeping to the left and beginning the winding descent. The path soon comes to a large crossroads.

Blue Cross markings

Keep to the right to reach a fork.

(17) Take the bend to the right. At the next bend, turn left. Do the same at the following junction. At a small fork, you can go straight ahead to see part of the Haguneck ruins. Otherwise, take the track on the left.

Red Diamond markings

At the next fork, go right and you will reach another fork.

No markings

Turn right to see the ruins of Hagueneck.

(18) Then return to the junction.

Red Diamond markings

Turn right. When you rejoin the track, follow it to the right before taking the path leading down to the left and arriving at a crossroads.

(19) Stay on the path that descends to the left.

Yellow Triangle markings

At the bottom, as you leave the forest, turn left. At the two junctions, go straight on and then join a small road.

(20) Head straight on along this road, which bends to the right. Follow this road to the crossroads with the cross.

(21) Go past the cross and take the next track on the right. At the next junction, do the same before turning left, then heading right.

Green Ring signposting

At the end of the path, keep left onto Rue Porte Haute and head towards the first houses of Eguisheim.

(22) Turn right onto Rue du Bassin. At the junction, go straight ahead and follow this street to the D14.

Yellow Ring signposting

(23) Head down this road to the left, then take the first path on the right. At the next junction, turn right up a slight incline. At the crossroads with the bench, go straight ahead. Then keep going straight at every junction until you reach the second hill.

No signposting

(24) Head straight ahead onto Rue de Colmar. At the junction at the entrance to Omermorschwihr, turn right and follow the road to the junction on the right. Then turn left onto Rue du Vignoble. At the statue of the Virgin Mary, on Rue de Marbach, take the path on the right towards the church.

(25) Continue towards the car park. At the car park, turn left, cross Rue de Marbach and head straight ahead to reach the vineyard. Immediately ignore a path coming from the left. At the next junction, turn left and continue to the end.

Discovery trail

(26) Turn right onto the discovery trail. Go straight on until you reach the start of the small road. Continue along this road and take a left-hand bend.

Unmarked

Then continue straight on at every junction until you reach the cherry tree and the cemetery.

(27) Head straight ahead to follow the cemetery. At the corner where it meets the road, turn left onto Rue du Nord. Continue to Place de la Mairie. Turn right twice to reach Saint-Pantaléon Church.

(28) Return to Place de la Mairie and continue straight ahead along Rue Haute. At the first junction, go down Rue de la Fontaine, on the left, and cross Rue Basse. At the car park, turn right onto Rue de la Croix before staying on the path on the left. Then continue straight ahead until you reach Chemin du Hirrigweg.

(29) Turn right. At the end, continue along the track opposite. At the junction, keep left then follow the next track to the right. Ignore a path on the left to reach a small road.

(30) Go down this road. When you reach Rue du Muscat, turn right. At the end, on Rue de la Lauch, turn right again until you reach Saint-Martin’s Church.

(31) Continue straight ahead before taking the next right onto Rue du Schauenberg. At the junction, turn left onto Chemin Steinerweg. Then stay on the path going uphill straight ahead until you reach a T-junction.

(32) Turn right and, following the road, head towards the Col du Neuland (S/E).
