In Le Bugue, from the Tourist Office, head towards ‘Les Eyzies – Sarlat’. The village of Campagne is just beyond the bridge over the Vézère. Walk through the village and continue straight on towards Saint-Cyprien until you reach the state forest car park, opposite the ‘Val de la Marquise’ campsite.
(S/E) From the signpost, take the wooden staircase located just past the information board, following the sign for the ‘circular path of the Polissoir’. At the top of the steps, turn left and walk alongside the castle’s old stables until you reach the steps leading to the ‘Chemin des Dames’.
(1) Do not take the ‘Escalier des Dames’; instead, continue straight ahead on the path which slopes down slightly. Carry on along the path, passing by the side of the gate, and continue to the junction.
(2) At the junction, take the path leading uphill to the right. Continue along this forest track, go through the second gate and carry on climbing through the forest for about 800 m until you reach the top of the plateau. At the junction, turn right towards the Polissoir (50 m away).
(3) After the Polissoir, continue along the forest track to the information board about the Éperon Barré, situated by the side of the track on your left.Take this opportunity to learn more about the sites that archaeologists refer to as “Éperon Barré”. Pass the board and continue for about a hundred metres before turning right towards the viewpoint. On the right-hand side of the path, the low dry-stone wall is a remnant of the enclosure of an ancient village dating from the Neolithic period. It served to secure the northern face of the Éperon Barré. You’ll arrive at the viewpoint, which overlooks the Vézère valley. A table with benches is available so you can rest for a moment and admire the scenery before you.
(4) Take the path to the left of the guardrail, which descends into the forest towards Château de Campagne for about 1 km until you reach the sign ‘Retour Château de Campagne 800 m’.
(5) Continue to the right, following the ‘Retour’ sign. The path ends at the top of the Escalier des Dames, which you spotted at the start of the walk. Note the man-made hollows, known as cluzeaux. Go down a few steps and continue along the path past the cluzeaux to return to the car park (S/E).
