Description of the walk

Park in the large Terre Rouge car park at Les Orres.

(S/E) Climb the large staircase to reach Place Jean Rippert, turn left, go down a small flight of stairs, then turn right to pass under the archway towards the “front de neige”. Take the metal staircase and turn left, passing in front of the Pré Claux chairlift departure point. Take the path leading uphill to the left and cross a small wooden bridge.

(1) Join a piste beneath the Pré Bois chairlift and turn left; at the next junction, take the piste on the right, pass under the Slalom ski lifts, then under the Pic Vert ski lift and continue along the piste. Pass under the Grand Clos chairlift and continue along the piste.

(2) At a bend, leave the track and take a small path on the left, marked in orange, and continue straight on until you reach the Casouerts 1970 signpost.

(3) Take the path on the right, marked in orange, towards the Col de Terre Rouge. Continue along this small path and, via numerous tight hairpin bends, reach the pass.

(4) Stay on the path that heads right into the rocks. Follow the cairns and orange markings closely and, after a climb that is sometimes steep, you will reach the two summits of the Pic de Boussolenc. Take the opportunity to admire the view.

(5) Descend opposite via the ridge path. You’ll reach a small hut, at the bottom of the first descent, situated amongst the rocks. Turn right and cross through a hollow.

(6) Turn left to pass above the top of the Crêtes chairlift and continue straight along the track. Reach the top of the Portette ski lift.

(7) Turn right onto the track, continue along this track and pass beneath the Fontaines chairlift, keeping the top of the chairlift on your left; please note that the actual route differs slightly from the IGN map.

(8) Below the Fontaines chairlift, continue along the track; at the next junction, carry straight on along the small track, then turn left and right to pass alongside the reservoir.

(9) Before the pumping station, take the path on the left through the grass and continue straight on, crossing a mountain bike track. Pass under the Pousterle chairlift and continue straight on, joining a small path and turning right. Continue along this path alongside the chairlift. Leave it to reach the top of the Pré Claux chairlift.

(10) Pass over the arrival pylon, continue along the track, pass under this chairlift and reach the top station of the Prés Bois chairlift.

(11) Take the second track on the left, go round the restaurant passing under the chairlift, pass between the departure points of the Les Fontaines and Pousterle chairlifts; here again, the reality is slightly different from the IGN map.
Continue along the track towards the resort; at the junction at the top of the resort, carry straight on then turn right onto the path leading down towards the resort. Once you reach the Pré Claux chairlift square, head towards the central square by passing between the buildings. In the square, turn left, go down the stairs to reach the departure car park (S/E).

Be careful not to follow the initial directions, which lead to a mountain bike trail with a risk of collision. You need to take the dirt roads, which makes the route a little longer.
There is a very steep and poorly marked section (more black than orange markers) to get around the first peak. Beautiful view at the top.
Very steep descent on uninteresting dirt roads.

Hello, lovely hike, but too many wide tracks cutting across the trails for my liking. I also had a bit of trouble finding the path just before the peak. But the view from the top was brilliant 👍. Have a good day.

A superb hike that we were delighted to do again in the direction given in the description (we’d already done it the other way round).
We set off from Les Orres 1650, which added a bit of a challenge to the climb.
There were plenty of people at the summit, but they only stopped for a very short while, which kept the flow of people coming and going moving smoothly.
Thank you for this lovely variation on the route across this iconic summit of Les Orres.

We did the hike in the opposite direction. The advantage of this is that it avoids the section with the steep climbs, and you don’t have to face them once you’re on the ridge. The descent with the view towards Terre Rouge is superb. In my view, this doesn’t change the difficulty of the circular route. Whichever way you go, the ascent and descent of the Pic require careful attention, with scree and steep, overhanging sections.
Set off at dawn to enjoy the coolness of the slope, which is still in the shade in the morning, and to reach the peak before the ski lifts open (which bring crowds to the ridges and mountain bikes onto the trails we use). As a result, the pleasure of being alone throughout the entire route!
This hike is suitable for a dog accustomed to this type of terrain and elevation gain. No herds with mountain dogs on this side, just cows.
Thanks to Laurent François for providing the additional information I requested for this route!

Thank you very much for your clarification.
I’ve been hiking in the mountains for a few years now, and I’ve recently moved to Les Orres. But before setting off on this sort of terrain with a dog (even if it is a goat!), I’d prefer to be sure of any potential difficulties, especially on a route rated ‘very difficult’.
I have good boots, a GPS, and am used to rocky or scree (stable) terrain with the occasional bit of scrambling, though I’m no mountaineer either. I always let someone I know know where I’m going when I’m out on my own.
I imagine the summer chairlift brings quite a few walkers to this ridge, just like it does to the Aupillon, I suppose. The plan is to set off very early to avoid the holiday crowds during the day.
Thank you for taking the time to reply!

Hello. Sorry for the late reply. It’s the final stretch of the climb that’s tricky: walking along a narrow ledge path over scree and rocks, with the cairns difficult to spot (but that’s what mountain walking is all about). It’s possible to do it alone with good footwear, a GPS and a military map, and by letting someone know. There’s no climbing involved; only the final few metres are steep. The terrain is stable, but you still need to be very careful
On arrival at the summit, there are lots of people; the fairly steep descent is done in a crowd, as this isn’t the most popular route – the crowds take the cable car up to the summit and then do a round trip via the path suggested for the descent.
On the day I went hiking, we weren’t alone on the route I suggest; two groups were following us.
I did this hike at the age of 71 and I am neither a mountaineer nor a seasoned hiker
Best regards.

Hello,

This hike is rated as very difficult, with the note “for experienced hikers”. However, there is no mention of the difficulties in the route description.
Is this due to the distance or elevation gain? Or are there other technical difficulties (exposed sections, climbing, unstable terrain, etc.)?
I hike alone with my dog and would like to know if this route is feasible under these conditions.
Thanks in advance!
