Description of the walk

Park in the large Terre Rouge car park at Les Orres 1850.

(S/E) Take the steps through the building to reach Place Jean Rippert; leave the square on the right and take the path leading uphill to the right towards the lake. Join a track.

(1) Follow the green markings for the Chemin des Sages. Continue straight on, take a small path and enter the woods. At a T-junction, turn left then straight on to reach the top of the Pré Longis chairlift.

(2) Walk past the top station of the Pré Longis chairlift and take the track on the left, passing under the Pousterle and Les Fontaines chairlifts. Continue along the track until you reach the next Y-junction.

(3) Turn right and follow the track until you reach another T-junction.

(4) At this junction, turn right, pass under the Les Fontaines chairlift and continue along the track. At the next junction, turn left.

(5) At the T-junction, turn right, cross the mountain bike trail twice with care and continue along the track to reach the top of the Pousterle chairlift.

(6) Turn left and follow the Génépi ski lift for a short while towards the orientation table. Soon leave this behind via a small path on the left climbing up through the rocks, marked in orange. Join a track and turn right. Continue along the track following the red markings until you reach the top of the Génépi ski lift.

(7) Continue along the path on the left (marked in red) to reach the orientation table via the Sentier des Carins

(8) At the orientation table, you can take the blue-marked descent through the rocks; personally, I opted for a gentler descent, retracing my steps for 200 m and taking the first path on the left through the grass to reach a track further down.

(9) Turn left, pass a ski lift and continue straight on along the ledge, following the cairns – be careful as the path is a bit overgrown. Join the path coming from the orientation table at the information board, turn right and continue the descent to reach a small clearing with information boards.

(10) Continue downwards; at the next junction, turn right and follow the blue markings. Be careful: in the woods, a lovely unmarked path is very tempting, but it leads straight back down to the ski resort. Make sure you follow the blue markings closely.

(11) Head back down to the station via the path furthest to the right. At the next junction, the Remollon signpost, turn right, cross the bridge over the torrent to reach the Vieille Cabane signpost.

(12) Continue straight along the path; at the ‘Chisa’ signpost, turn left towards Bois Méan. At the next junction, ‘Roche Nollande’, turn left then right.
At the T-junction, turn left, then left again towards the resort, cross a track and carry on straight ahead. Follow another track, turn right, then take the second path on the left to reach the Pré Claux chairlift square.

(13) Turn slightly left, pass between the buildings to reach Place Jean Rippert, then take the large steps on the left to reach the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

At the orientation table, there is a 360° view.
The Lake Sainte-Marguerite is very beautiful.

I set off very early from the resort, at 7.00 am, and was on my own all the way to the top of the chairlift. The only highlight of this first section was the view of the resort as I climbed. The route isn’t the same as it used to be, but as you know where you’re going, there’s no difficulty at all in following the slopes.
From the top of the chairlift, at 9.00 am, day hikers started arriving via the lift. Going via the viewpoint allowed me to avoid them. I went up there on my own and was able to take the time to admire the scenery. I was on my own until I reached the flat stretch where the signposts are. And from there, it was a sea of people – whole families in canvas trainers, with dogs and the whole shebang. So I picked up the pace until I reached the lake, where there were already loads of people.
The walk back to the resort was quick; I passed lots of people on the way too.
The lake is well worth a visit, but what time should you set off to enjoy it in peace? Perhaps camp there?
Thanks so much for this walk.

A lovely hike completed in just over 6 hours. Approx. 1050m+ of elevation gain.

The ascent initially follows red ski runs with a steep gradient, and you need to be in good physical shape to tackle them. I noticed that you can occasionally veer off the main trail to take blue runs that are slightly less steep. Or, for those who aren’t so fit, there’s always the chairlift. But you’ll miss out on a lovely stretch with the marmots

After the orientation table, we followed the route’s markings, which were mostly red (rather than orange). The stony descent is manageable if you take care.

After a giant cairn, the descent towards the lake begins. But the GPS track is now incorrect. At the signpost indicating the lake, it directs you to the left, along a path that is now closed. You need to head right, following blue markings. This path starts by winding downwards before rejoining the GPS track for this route via a parallel path about 50 metres further down. The markings are clearly signposted.

After the lake, it’s a gentle descent to the resort (and a lovely stretch as it’s shaded by the forest).

A hike starting from the Pousterle chairlift, undertaken to scout the route for a group of people who don’t walk much and aren’t familiar with the mountains. My GPS shows 7.4 km, with an elevation gain of 112 m and a loss of 731 m.
No major difficulties, with some very beautiful views along the route.
Very busy during the summer holidays.
Kind regards,
Yves

Hello,

Thank you for your comment.

Reliability of the route on the map: Disappointing

We’re undoubtedly a long way off the 2,800 m cumulative elevation gain

The route is accurate, though you’re right – the elevation gains and losses are incorrect. I’ve run a recalculation and the new figures are 1,055 m elevation gain and 1,050 m elevation loss.

See you soon

This route looks interesting, but the altitude data is completely skewed by repeated altimeter errors: we’re no doubt a long way off the 2,800 m of cumulative elevation gain! The diagram clearly shows what happened: the route needs to be cleaned up to remove the outliers.
