Col de la Seigne circular route

A hike that skirts the Mont Blanc massif (and follows part of the legendary TMB). A circular hike offering spectacular views of the Vallée des Glaciers and Chapieux. Mont Blanc crowns the ascent when the weather permits. You could almost touch it.

Description of the walk

Leave your car (or shuttle) at the car park near the Chalet des Lanchettes. The markings are always yellow. You must pay close attention, as some cairns can be misleading.

(S/E) Head north towards the Robert Blanc refuge. The hike begins on a gently sloping track suitable for vehicles, which narrows near a parking area (presumably used to supply the refuge during the season). Continue climbing and cross several streams. The vegetation changes and this is a favourite spot for summer grazing herds. After skirting a rocky outcrop at the bottom, tackle a slightly steeper climb to a junction near the Lanchettes Glacier.

(1) Ignore the path on the left leading to the Croix du Bonhomme refuge and take the path on the right, which winds its way through the rocks and scree. It is important to follow the markings (yellow circles or white circles). And suddenly... the small roof you spotted, which looked like the roof of an alpine sheepfold, turns out to be the Robert Blanc refuge (majestic and perched high up). Head for it.

(2) Turn right onto the gently sloping path through the scree. Pass a rocky ridge with a few tricky sections (cables and steps). Emerge onto the lateral moraine of the glacier.

(3) Descend along the bed of a meltwater stream (yellow marker). Vegetation gradually returns.

(4) At the bottom of the moraine, the path veers left to cross the old glacier bed (alternating between streams, scree and rocky outcrops). Make sure to follow the yellow markings.

(5) After passing a rocky outcrop, the path climbs through vegetation and then over scree. Take care not to lose the path; the yellow markings are faint. Continue the descent, passing the Barre des Cabottes, before tackling a tricky climb over damp slate. The end of the climb is equipped with a cable, essential for safety. You will reach a barren scree slope.

(6) Descend towards the Col de la Seigne, following the French-Italian border. There are many hikers of all nationalities who come here. Reach the Col de la Seigne and enjoy a stunning view: Mont Blanc, with valleys on either side.

(7) Turn right onto theGR® Tour du Mont Blanc trail to descend back into the valley. The gentle slope allows you to admire the scenery.

(8) You’ll easily reach the Chalet-Refuge des Mottets.

(9) Cross the Torrent des Glaciers to begin a short climb and reach the road above.

(10) Turn right to reach the Lanchettes chalets (S/E).

Notes

To reach the Chalet des Lanchettes from Chapieux, there are two options. During the season, a regular shuttle bus runs to the valley from Chapieux from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm (check timetables, fares and schedule) and back. The other option is by car, i.e. outside these times. The advantage here is that you’ll be among the first to take the trail. The animals haven’t hidden away yet.

(2) The Robert Blanc refuge is very welcoming and the wardens are friendly. They offer good advice on how to spend the rest of the day.
To get a view of the glacier bed, continue straight on for a few minutes to reach the top of the pile.
Shelter: at the refuges (Robert Blanc and Mottets).
Water: at the refuges, and beneath the glacier (meltwater).
Essential kit: all-weather clothing, first-aid kit, sun protection... nothing out of the ordinary.

I completed this hike in mid-September 2024... despite the fact that it had snowed the previous week in the higher ground. I won’t dwell on the snow, which made the hike much trickier in terms of route marking and grip; thankfully, the sun was shining brightly. I’d like to make an important point regarding the few tricky sections: there are several sections with safety cables, the last of which (on the route from the refuge to the Col de la Seigne) is genuinely difficult if you’re prone to vertigo. The others don’t pose any particular problems, but the last one, just before reaching the pass, can slow you down—except that...it is not possible to turn back in time, nor to bypass the problem. The wet ground, caused by melting snow, made the passage even more difficult. Personally, on the descent, I would not have been able to get past it. The others would also have been more difficult in the other direction...
Difficulties are relative to each individual. For me, it wasn’t the length, the slopes or the signposting... but that final ‘dizzying’ section.
It will remain a memorable hike with breathtaking views over the valley of the glaciers, and then over Mont Blanc!

Hike completed on 25 August 2022. A bit of a late review 😄
I can confirm Hammich’s information from 1 October 2023
This hike can be classified as ‘challenging’ given its length, the need to look for markings and cairns (almost off-trail, constantly ascending and descending between (3) and (6)), the actual elevation gain of around 1,300m, and the altitude.
The most critical sections are the stream crossings in sections (4) and (5), especially one! Call the refuge to check there isn’t too much water; otherwise, the crossing is dangerous!
Only attempt in good weather and setting off early in the morning.

A challenging hike due to the significant elevation gain on the ascent to the refuge and the fairly technical traverse beneath the glacier (points 3 to 6). It is far from a straightforward route to reach the final valley behind the rocky ridge of Les Cabottes. Allow 3+ hours to reach point 6 from the refuge. The return journey follows the easy TMB trail. Best undertaken in good weather to enjoy the views and walk on dry ground.
Note that the circular loop in the opposite direction appears more challenging and technical, as the numerous sections with handrails will need to be tackled on the descent.
Hiking through this cirque of the Aiguille des Glaciers is quite an experience and the view from the Col de la Seigne is truly spectacular. An unforgettable hike!

We started the route at Ville des Glaciers (an extra 2.5 km, but it avoids the climb up to Les Lanchettes after the Refuge des Mottets).
Take care at point 1 so as not to miss the turn-off to the Robert Blanc refuge.

A superb hike, made all the better by glorious weather and stunning scenery; a very well-marked trail, whether by the yellow markings or the cairns.
Don’t underestimate, for some, the sections of the trail that are ‘slippery’ underfoot, as well as certain sections with cables.
