Circular route from the ‘cemetery of dogs’ to Parc-d’Anxtot

A walk combining country lanes and a bit of road. You’ll enjoy the landscapes of the Pays de Caux and, for the curious, the churches, châteaux and a few houses typical of the region. For food lovers, you can stop off at the bar in Gommerville... and finally, a rather unusual feature of this route: the dog cemetery.

Description of the walk

Park near Saint-Blaise Church in Parc d'Anxtot.

(S/E) Follow Rue de la Forge towards Saint-Gilles-de-la-Neuvile, with your back to the church. At the junction, turn left onto Rue des Calètes.

(1) When you reach the crossroads, go straight on along the path surrounded by grassland. Follow it to the end between two fenced-off fields, turning right at a 90° angle. At the end of the path, veer slightly to your left and go up the small road (Chemin du Colombier).

(2) Take the path on the left... don’t bother looking for the dovecote, we’ve never seen it. Follow the path as it makes a first turn to the right and continue to the corner of the Bois de la Marnière.

(3) Take the path on the right which runs along the edge of the woods. Continue straight on along the stony path (Chemin de la Caroline), almost directly beneath a power line.

(4) When you reach the wayside shrine, turn left onto Route de Gommerville. Cross the motorway bridge, take thefirst right onto Rue de la Chouette and follow it round the left-hand bend.

(5) At the corner of a property, turn left onto Chemin de l'Abattoir, follow the grounds of Château de Filières on your left and join the D80 at Gommerville.

(6) You can choose to take a short detour via the church, or turn left under the beech grove onto Rue du Château de Filières.

(7) Turn right onto Chemin de la Ferme de la Motte. At the end of the lane, after passing a magnificent building hidden behind a hedge on your left, turn left onto Rue de la Motte and walk alongside the farm of the same name. You will arrive at the dog cemetery.

(8) Continue along Route du Bas de la Mare au Leu until you reach a four-way junction.

(9) Go straight on. At the three-way junction, keep left onto the path through the fields. When you reach the wasteland, turn left and head through the woodland to reach the junction with Route de Saint-Jean.

(10) Cross the road and head straight on towards the tunnel under the motorway. Pass the Route du Colombier on your right and carry on to the junction at the corner of the Bois de la Marnière, which you passed on the way out.

(3) Continue straight ahead, following the same route as on the way there.

(2) Turn right and stay on Chemin du Colombier until you reach the junction with Rue de la Caroline.

(11) Follow it to the right.

(1) Continue straight ahead along Rue de l'Église and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Bakery, grocery shop and bar in Gommerville.

Worth a visit

During the walk, you can admire the metal sculptures at the old smithy in Parc d’Anxtot and take in the sight of a magnificent thatched cottage.

You can take in the understated charm of the 16th-century Saint Blaise Church in Parc d’Anxtot, as well as its neighbour, Saint Martin’s Church in Gommerville.

You can also quench your thirst at the Bar de Gommerville and pop into the village bakery.
Make sure you have a bit of cash to hand (€5 per person, I believe) if you wish to visit Filières Castle.

If you’re quiet enough, you might spot some deer sheltering in the Bois de la Marnière or behind the Château de Filières.

A very pleasant, easy walk offering varied scenery and points of interest.
In fact, at point 1, do not follow the path through the grassland, as it is impassable due to subsidence suggesting the presence of a marl pit. Naturally, we battled through the grass and spiders for 200 metres before finding the official ‘No Entry’ sign, right where the path meets the small road! We crossed our fingers as we passed the holes; Oops!
Among many other things, note the Château de Filères (which is open to visitors) and the dog cemetery at point 8. On 21 July 2024, we met people there who had buried their two dogs. It’s touching.
A big thank you to the author; I had no idea there was such a variety of landscapes in the Pays de Caux.

Thank you for your comment. A hole did indeed form on that section this winter.

Excellent description of the route – thanks to the author.
A lovely little walk with varied countryside scenery.
Please note: at point 1, do not take the path opposite but the small road on the right, as the path is closed (due to the risk of a potential clay pit).

The route was better than I’d imagined. Quite varied in the end, and not too much tarmac.
Plenty of chestnuts to be found.
The route description was spot on.
Thanks to the author.
