Description of the walk

Park at a place called Les Ailes in Rencurel. There is no car park; the easiest option is to ask to park near the barn.

(S/E) From there, take the small road uphill for 100m and take the path on the left, which slopes gently downwards alongside some beautiful trees.
You’ll reach the road at a place called Le Chargeoir; cross it and head up the path opposite. Turn left into the forest, continuing to climb. Stay on this path until you cross the same road again at a place called Les Antis.

(1) Take the path opposite, the GR®9, and follow it to the Goulandière shelter.

(2) Continue straight ahead, south-west on theGR®9to reach the ghost village of La Petite Goulandière, a very impressive site, especially in foggy weather.

(3) Continue down towards the south to reach the Pas du Ranc viewpoint. If the weather is fine, there is a superb view of the Bourne. A picnic table is available.

(4) Start the climb back up towards the Goulandière shelter.

(2) Continue to the right, heading east, passing in front of this refuge. You will reach a junction of two paths.

(5) Leave the path on the right that descends to the Barrage de la Balme and take the almost level path on the left. You will reach the Font de la Tine.

(6) Be careful here, as the path is not very well marked; continue north, east, then north again to return to Les Ailes and the car park where you started (S/E).

A superb hike – thank you so much for sharing this. On Saturday, we were able to do it on snowshoes in glorious sunshine. The village of La Goulandière, and a little further on, La Petite Goulandière, then the Ranc viewpoint – absolutely stunning. We only came across two other people. A wonderful silence, and plenty of animal tracks. Absolutely brilliant!

A pleasant, really peaceful walk through the forest. You come out at the famous ghost village, which is truly impressive, as is the view of the cliffs.
There was no snow when we were there, but it’s also very easy to do on foot
