Description of the walk

Take the D954 to the car park before the large bridge crossing the Ubaye coming from Savines-le-Lac, or just after it if arriving from Le Lauzet-Ubaye. You’ll see the unpaved entrance to the tunnel through which you’ll return.

(S/E) Cross the road with care, head left and follow it, then take the wide path that climbs to the right. This path winds through the woods towards the house perched above.

(1) At the end of the path, turn left, go behind the houses to explore the hamlet and the grassy valley, and enjoy the picnic table.

(2) Turn back.

(1) Take the path on the left. The path then runs along the valley, crossing a few ravines.

(3) Continue straight on, undeterred by the Roche Rousse waterfall.

(4) About 250 m after the waterfall, take the path on the right which descends towards the abandoned hamlet of Roche Rousse.

(5) After the hamlet, turn right and enter the tunnel. Continue straight on. Cross an impressive bridge, then pass through a second tunnel.
Please note: at the end of the route, construction lorries may use this tunnel.

Continue to the car park near the bridge over the Ubaye (S/E).

Worth a visit

A family-friendly hike. Along the route, the Pays d’art et d’histoire has added a fun element: if you look closely, you’ll see signposts featuring a child’s face. These indicate that a tube is hidden nearby, containing a little challenge to complete.

For the tunnels, bring a jumper and, of course, torches.

Between points (3) and (4), the path is sometimes narrow and very stony. You need to be sure-footed, which may not be suitable for children under 10. Good walking shoes are essential.

After the hike, it’s worth taking a detour to Le Lauzet-Ubaye: you can swim in its small lake, and the medieval bridge is well worth a visit.
