Park in the car park at the entrance to Maljasset.
(S/E) Walk through Maljasset and continue along the path to reach the church and cemetery at Maurin. A few metres further on, you’ll come to a crossroads of tracks.
(1) Take the track on the right, which slopes gently downwards. Cross the bridge over the Ubaye and then begin the climb. You will reach the junction with the track leading to the old marble quarry.
(2) Keep to the right, ignoring the path leading to the quarry. Continue the climb to reach the crossroads near the Bergeries de Mary.
(3) Turn right onto the path leading up to the Marinet Lakes. The
first lake, the small Lac de Marinet.
(4) Turn right, cross the small spillway and find the path. Use the map to find your way and climb for a while before turning left to reach the slope overlooking the upper lakes.
(5) Descend towards the two Upper Marinet Lakes and reach them.
(6) Go round them, then reach the scree slope formed by successive rockfalls from the mountains overlooking the lakes and cross it. Note: it is difficult to find a path here but it is not tricky; you must step over the large boulders and descend, aiming for the path visible further down, and follow it to reach the Grand Lac du Marinet.
(7) Take theGRP® to the right to begin a new ascent. Continue through the valley to reach the Col frontière de Marinet.
(8) Turn left onto the ridge, descend and emerge at another border pass, the Col de Mary. Take the opportunity here to spot the Lacs du Roure and the paths leading to them.
(9) Take these paths, heading to the right (north-east). Keep to the left of the scree slopes to reach the first Lac du Roure.
(10) Follow the gently sloping paths to reach the second lake.
(11) Now follow the stream flowing out of this lake, the Beal du Roure. Note: it is easy to follow, even when dry, as the stones are a rusty brown or copper colour and very easy to spot.
Join theGRP® above the Bergerie Supérieure de Mary.
(12) Turn right onto it to quickly reach the crossroads by the sheepfold you passed on the way out.
(3) Follow the route back in the opposite direction to return to the Majasset car park (S/E).
