La Tête de Miéjour

If you park at the Maljasset car park, this is the first peak you’ll come across!
Very few people climb it. From the pass and its summit, there is a magnificent view of the hikes available in the area.

Description of the walk

Park at the Maljasset car park, Ubaye Valley, in the commune of Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye.

(S/E) Head back down the road to the hamlet of La Barge.

(1) Before the village, take the bridge, clearly visible from the road, cross the Ubaye and head straight up into the forest. You’ll reach a crossroads of paths.

(2) Take the path on the right (barely legible sign for “la Teste”). This path is not shown on the IGN map. The climb is quite steep but the little-used path remains clearly visible. You’ll reach another junction; note the path that descends to the left for the return journey.

(3) Continue climbing until you reach the edge of the forest, where you’ll find another junction.

(4) Take the path on the right, passing in front of the Cabane de Teste. Follow the valley.
Further on, leave the mountain pasture by crossing the stream (dry!), and climb up to the Col de Miéjour on the right-hand side of the valley. The pass is straight ahead, not the one on the left!
On reaching the pass, there is a superb view of the Aiguilles, the lakes and the Col de Marinet.

(5) Set off again to the left, following the ridge line, pass a first peak (2654 m), descend, then climb again to reach the Tête de Miejour (2689 m).
For a bird’s-eye view of Maljasset, follow the descending ridge for about a hundred metres to the cross (impressive! but be careful, the drop is very close). Superb view of the Girardin.

(6) Move away from this steep area by climbing back up towards the summit, then follow the ridge down to the Teste hut. Return to the forest crossroads.

(4) Follow the route you took on the way up and reach the crossroads you passed at the start.

(3) Descend via the path on the right.
You’ll reach a junction with a maze of tracks trodden by cows.

(7) Take the most obvious one towards the village.
You’ll emerge into an avalanche cone (lots of uprooted trees).

(8) Head north and cross the Ubaye to reach the car park (S/E).
Warning: There is no longer a bridge at this point.

A lovely walk, whether it’s the valley, the view from the pass or the route along the ridge towards the summit. Unfortunately, the path is no longer maintained. It has disappeared in the first section (the climb straight up through the larch trees after the bridge below the hamlet of La Barge). I recommend taking the route marked for the return journey from Maljasset. This part of the path still exists, mainly because it is a route used by herds heading to the mountain pastures. There are therefore several tracks trodden by the cows, but it is easy to find your way. Once in the valley, you’ll find a path for the ascent. For the descent, head off-track, but this presents no difficulty and you cannot get lost.

A lovely walk, but we struggled for about an hour before we found the path back up; don’t rely on the GPS track, as it’s virtual and led us astray. What a shame! The path through the forest (which we followed in its entirety on the way back) is marked with old white markings that are still visible, unlike the trail on the ground, which is sometimes hard to make out in the lower section due to the herds of cows... Once out of the forest, the route is straightforward. The stone Teste hut is magnificent.
We didn’t come across anyone. There’s no longer a cross at the summit, which is crumbling; just one last cairn.
Parking available at La Barge.

A lovely hike, which we did as a circular hike, returning via the Col de Miéjour and the Vallon de Mary. The "path" winds around the Aiguille Pierre André, with its magnificent rock colours, then joins a small grassy pass on the right, which allows you to avoid the large boulders. It joins a very exposed path leading down into the Vallon de Mary.
Thanks to the author for this lovely hiking suggestion.

The hike was billed as "difficult"... and we weren't disappointed!!!!!
Very challenging, with stunning scenery, especially at the summit and along the ridges.
However, from the Teste hut, the signposting is inadequate (luckily there were cairns) all the way to the summit and non-existent from the ridges on the way back.
A GPS with Visorando was very useful, especially on the way back

Hello,

A lovely hike, with chamois at the top of the pass and a superb view of the Ubaye valley.
From the car park to the bridge, take the path along the banks of the Ubaye rather than the road.
Kind regards
