Bonifatu Two-Sides Circular Loop

Bonifatu, with its forest of pine and oak trees, is a great spot for swimming, as well as for walking and hiking. Here, I suggest a route that combines several circular loops, allowing you to explore different slopes.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Bonifatu.

(S/E) Walk right to the bottom of the car park and take the path leading to the river. The Ficaghjola circular path is signposted there (blue markings). Cross the bridge and you will soon reach a junction.

(1) Turn right and follow the path as it winds tightly until you reach another junction.

(2) Keep to the right, ignoring the path leading to Punta di Ficaghiola. You will reach a crossroads.

(3) Let the Blue route head off to the right and turn left towards Ortu di u Piobbu. The markings are now Yellow.

(4) At the signpost, leave the path leading to the Ortu di u Piobbu refuge and take the very narrow path climbing up to the left. A sign indicates “footbridge”: you must follow this narrower path.

(5) At this junction, turn right to follow the Finocchi circular loop (red markings). Return to the first junction on the route.

(1) Continue straight on, cross the footbridge again and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Parking is easy. In summer, depending on the times, there is a charge for parking (a few euros).
The site has dry toilets in summer.
You’ll also find places to eat on site.
The trails are very well signposted and clean

Worth a visit

Lush vegetation including maritime pines, Lariccio pines and holm oaks, amongst others. The mountain views are breathtaking.
After the hike (and even during it, as the route crosses the Melaghia stream), you can cool off in the river. The Figarella and Lamitu streams feature wide pools and basins that delight young and old alike.
In summer, this spot offers a cool haven perfect for relaxation.

A pleasant hike with a gradual climb (be careful, the left fork is not easy to find, there is no network coverage and the geolocation is off). It was hot, 32 degrees. We ran out of water (we had 1 litre each). And the last kilometre (lots of rocks) is (very) difficult with climbs, descents, scrambling... it took us a good 7 hours.

Very beautiful hike, we didn't see anyone, very beautiful view, quite difficult due to the rocks, so allow a little more time. It's really very pleasant at this time of year.

Beautiful hike. It climbs quite a bit, so be careful at the fork because there is no mobile phone reception and the geolocation is not great. The last kilometre in particular (we followed the directions) is a bit tough, not to say really hard... climbing, several rock slides, not easy... so glad to get there! Yes, we are in our sixties, but we are seasoned hikers...

A beautiful hike with stunning views and a large car park, which is currently free but may soon become pay-to-use given the installation of barriers, which is a shame. Otherwise, it's a very beautiful route, but it lacks signage. One minute you're on the red trail, the next you're on the blue, then the yellow. Thank you, Visorando, for the GPX file of the route that I was able to save on my watch. It was very helpful. Be sure to check the weather before you set off. We started out in blazing sunshine and a beautiful blue sky, but halfway through the ride we were hit by a thunderstorm with hail and lightning 🥲. I recommend this beautiful loop 😉

For this hike, there’s no point covering such a long distance and climbing so much elevation just to end up seeing the same views, even if the surroundings are very beautiful. It’s a real leg-burner. Between points 3 and 4, it’s genuinely uninteresting, with a badly worn path. It goes up, it goes down – it never ends. You catch a glimpse of the sea in the distance for a few moments between points 5 and 1, but at what cost! A hike for fitness enthusiasts. Didn’t see anyone else apart from a ranger from point 3 onwards. Take plenty of water ; thankfully, the river is a welcome relief on arrival.

Circular route with some very beautiful sections (between points 1 and 3, then 4 and 5, and 5 to 1). Unfortunately, the entire stretch between points 3 and 4 is actually a track for 4x4 vehicles, no doubt to provide access to the refuge further up the GR. A wide, straight track with felled pine trunks on either side, ruts, and little or no access to the nearby stream. It’s a shame that in the name of ‘promoting’ the legendary GR20… its surroundings are being ruined…
