Description of the walk

In the centre of Vézeronce, on the road to Saint-Sorlin, take Rue du Moulin on the right to reach the start of the walk. Park on the central reservation at the three-way junction at the start.

(S/E) Take the Chemin du Roi de Caille, then turn right onto the Chemin des Violettes for 200 m.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin des Tuillières. After a long straight stretch, the path branches off to the left to join Chemin des Marais. Follow it straight ahead to the right.

(2) Turn right before the pond to take the Chemin des Mémoires. Cross two drainage channels and, after an uphill bend, you will reach the sensitive natural area.
Stop at the sign and take a detour of about twenty metres through this remarkable area. It is a sandy meadow dating from the Ice Age that is home to a colony of bee-eaters, birds with red and blue plumage that nest in the dunes. If you keep quiet, you will spot them easily.

(3) Continue along the path and turn right twice. You will arrive
the hamlet of Angloure (or Anglour). Cross the Route de Brailles, continue straight on to reach the Route de Bourgoin. Caution! Very tricky crossing.

(4) Read the sign for the botanical trail, which starts here. Follow the path to the fork where the path becomes a trail on the left. You’ll reach the sandy meadow again and enter the marshes, walking along a boardwalk for several hundred metres. Then walk alongside one of the Étangs de Charray before climbing up the hill.

(5) At the wider path, turn right. Ignore the continuation of the botanical trail which branches off to the left, as well as the path leading back down to your right.
''At the Loridan crossroads, you can take a detour to the Tour de Charray on the right''.

(6) Then take the path leading down to the right towards Charray, then the Route du Four Banal. Ignore the first road on the left, take the next one and you’ll reach the fountain and the D19.

(7) Use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road. Turn right, then immediately left onto the Chemin de Maletang, which leads downhill. Before the recycling bins, turn right, cross a bridge over the Ruisseau de Bailles and continue along the Chemin des Sables. The tarmac gives way to a good path and houses. Head left and you’ll reach the car park (S/E).

It’s a shame that both ponds are fenced off and that the ENS footpath isn’t maintained

This route is particularly interesting because of the sighting of this colony of European bee-eaters just before point 3!
Before point 5, we also saw and heard a second colony just after the short climb as we left the second pond: there is a large field on the right with a row of trees at the far end; you can spot them particularly in the dead tree at the end of this row.

The section within the ENS between points 4 and 5 is starting to become overgrown with brambles and nettles (they grow fast in June!). In fact, it’s easy to miss the point where you leave the path to take the trail.
It’s a shame the ENS signposts haven’t been updated...
