La Grésière loop via the Combe de Mayt

An easy loop starting from a village in Dévoluy, Le Courtil. This loop can be done in the other direction (which I prefer...), offering a beautiful view of the Pic de Bure.

Description of the walk

Park near the chapel.

Recommended alternative. To reduce the distance travelled, which can be reassuring in case of heavy traffic in the mountains: start from the upper car park of the Via Ferrata (2). This shortens the route slightly and requires you to bring your own water, as you will be bypassing the villages of Giers and Le Courtil and their fountains. In this case, when you arrive at (1), do not cross the Souloise river!

(S/E) Join the D117 road and follow it carefully to the left in a south-south-easterly direction. Pass Giers and then join the D17. Turn left.

(1) Continue to the right and climb the road that runs alongside the Via Ferrata des Etroits.

(2) At the top car park of the Via Ferrata, leave the road and turn left towards the north-east. Walk along the Gorges du Rif (yellow PR® markings). Go up the Rif and turn right at the end of the path to join the GR®93 (white and red markings).

(3) Turn left. Follow the GR® down into the Combe la Mayt until you reach a road (D517).

(4) Turn left and follow the road to the lower car park of the Via Ferrata, where you will find the Pont de Giers bridge.

(1) Turn right and follow the outward route to the hamlet of Le Courtil (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,240 m - Chapel of Le Courtil
  2. 1 : km 1.15 - alt. 1,229 m - Pont de Giers - crossroads of the loop - Souloise (rivière)
  3. 2 : km 1.67 - alt. 1,250 m - Car park at the top of the Via Ferrata
  4. 3 : km 3.18 - alt. 1,453 m - GR® junction, on the left
  5. 4 : km 4.73 - alt. 1,254 m - D517, on the left.
  6. S/E : km 7.27 - alt. 1,240 m - Chapel of Le Courtil

Notes

If you are not going on the Via Ferrata or climbing, no equipment is necessary.
Fresh water flows freely from the Courtil fountain or in the village of Giers (now twinned villages).
Accommodation is available (lodges) in the small pass and Saint-Étienne-en-Dévoluy.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Don't miss the fountain, the chapel
- Brasserie "Interstellaire du Dévoluy" in Le Courtil, to quench your thirst.
- The Via Ferrata des Etroit. Please note that special equipment is required. Following the road, you will get a good view of it, which may whet your appetite.
- The climbing site along the Rif. Again, this is not something you can improvise. (35 routes, all levels).
- The village of Saint-Étienne.

Hello, Thank you for your constructive comments. Indeed, during periods of high visitor numbers to the mountains (which is the case this week), there is a lot of traffic and the part of the route along the road is not the most pleasant, especially if you are accompanied by young children... As you can never be too careful, I would recommend starting from the car park at the top of the Via Ferrata; there is space for everyone, especially as many climbers park at the bottom, near their starting point! In this case, make sure you fill up with water beforehand, as you will not be able to use the village fountains.
Happy hiking!

The starting point (Le Courtil chapel) is very poorly chosen because it requires you to reach the trail by taking the D117 and then the D17 roads. On the D17 section after the bridge towards Saint Etienne en Devoluy, you walk on the edge of the road and along the rock face. This is extremely dangerous because vehicles brush past you.
We had to turn back. How can such a dangerous route be recommended when there is an alternative that involves parking at the top of the via ferrata (44.69644N 5.93425E (marker number 2 on the map for this hike)).
Perhaps this is to avoid cluttering up the car park for people who come to use the via ferrata?
Please correct the description of this hike for everyone's safety.
