Circular Duerne route via Pomeys, Lake Gimond and Aveize.

A little-used walk on the western slope of the Monts du Lyonnais, more rugged than wooded, where the landscape is open and offers beautiful views throughout the route. From Duerne, the route winds across a plateau, then descends gradually into the Orzon valley before climbing up to Pomeys and crossing a ridge. It descends at a steady gradient into the La Gimond valley and its lake, from where it climbs up to Aveize, then plunges into the Orjolle valley before returning to Duerne.

Description of the walk

By car: at the eastern entrance to Duerne, coming from St-Martin-en-Haut via the D34, or from Yzeron via the D489, park in the first car park on the right.

(S/E) From the car park at the Duerne boules stadium, cross the main road, then turn right (west) towards the village centre. Take the first left after the church.

(1) At the sign for “Duerne Le Bourg”, continue left along Rue des Écoles towards La Borgia. Ignore the side streets, cross the hamlet of La Borgia and reach a junction with a path leading in the opposite direction to the left.

(2) At the sign for “La Borgia”, stay on the path opposite, towards Roche Samson (south). Ignore a footpath, then the small road on the left, to reach a fork.

(3) At the “Roche Samson” sign, head towards Le Layat. About fifty metres further on, leave the road and turn left onto a level path, which then climbs. Proceed to a junction opposite a house. Keep to the right to reach the hamlet of Le Layat du Bas. Turn left onto the street (south), then right onto the D60 road (north) and, after 50 m, reach a junction (elevation 793).

(4) At the “Le Layat” sign, take the ascending path to Layat du Haut on the left, which leads, one kilometre further on, to a street and then, 20 m to the right, to a crossroads.

(5) At the “Les Bottières” sign, ignore the Chemin du Terron on the right, take the road on the left towards Croix Matour and, after 70 m, ignore the Impasse des Oiseaux on the left. Turn right and pass between some farmhouses; immediately afterwards, you’ll come to a fork (elevation 834).

(6) At the “Croix Matour” sign, take the path leading down to the left, into the woods, towards the Ruisseau d’Orzon. At the crossroads marked with a cross (elevation 780), continue straight ahead, passing through a wood. As you approach a large farm, ignore the path leading in the opposite direction on the left, and the subsequent ones. Follow the D60 road and cross it to turn left onto the D60E. After 50 m, leave it for a path on the right.

(7) Cross the D60 again and rejoin it at the end of the hamlet of La Rivoire. After just 50 m, leave it for a path on the left which, after a few metres, reaches a fork. Ignore the signposted path on the left (south-east) and continue (west) along the one opposite, to rejoin the first one on the left, 200 m further on. Ignore the left-hand branch and follow the one opposite, which, shortly afterwards, crosses the D60 and then descends towards a junction.

(8) At the “Ruisseau d’Orzon” sign, head left towards Le Manipan, following the river. At the fork near a house, continue straight ahead. Walk alongside the D 60 road and join it. Follow it for a few metres to the left, then take a path on the right which curves to the right before reaching a junction. Stay on the path straight ahead, ignoring the one on the left. Cross the Manipan stream and, at the fork just after, keep to the right to reach a junction at the 670m mark.

(9) At the “Le Manipan” sign, turn right towards the Bois Gerin junction, 400 m further on.

(10) At the “Bois Gerin” sign, follow the path straight ahead towards the Green Cross. Pass the hamlet of Les Chavannes, turn right onto the D4 road and, 50 m further on, go down a street on the left which joins the Route de Green Cross. Follow this for about a hundred metres before turning left onto a shortcut. Return to the road and continue straight ahead until you reach a junction just before the bridge.

(11) At the “Green Cross” sign, take the path on the left towards Le Plomb. Follow the Orzon stream and you’ll come to the road that runs through the hamlet of Le Plomb (altitude 636m).

(12) At the “Le Plomb” sign, turn right (west) towards “Pomeys Le Bourg”. After a right-hand bend, the road continues along a track. Turn left and follow the Orzon stream on your right until you reach a road. Follow it to the right, then, immediately afterwards, turn left onto a small tree-lined road. At the end of the road, turn left onto Chemin du Grand Siemens.

(13) Cross the D71 road, take the Chemin de Saint Roch opposite, then leave it at its left-hand bend to take a path opposite, which leads to a junction. Ignore the road on the right and take the one straight ahead. At the end of the street, keep left onto Rue du Vallon. At the end of the street, turn left again onto the main street, Rue du Tilleul, to arrive at a small square opposite the church.

(14) At the sign for "Pomeys Le Bourg", continue straight on towards Le Crêt. At the next fork, leave Rue du Tilleul and follow Montée Saint Martin, opposite, which ends at a crossroads.

(15) At the sign for “Le Crêt”, ignore the first path on the right and take the second one towards the Bois de Pomeys. At the fork, 50 m further on, take the path on the right, then do the same again 300 m later, until you reach a junction.

(16) At the sign for "Bois de Pomeys", take the path on the left, then, at the next junction, turn left again. Head towards the dam, do not cross it, and walk along the shores of Lake Gimond. At the far end of the lake, keep to the path on the left to reach a junction.

(17) At the “Barrage de Gimond” sign, head right towards Le Viricel, following the course of the Gimond. After a sharp right-hand bend, ignore the path opposite. Follow the one on the left, pass the hamlet of Viricel and reach a fork.

(18) At the sign for “Le Viricel”, continue along the path on the left. Cross the bridge over the Gimond and, immediately afterwards, reach a fork.

(19) At the sign for “La Planche”, take the path on the right towards Croix Michel, which continues as the Chemin des Ornages opposite. Ignore the side paths. At the junction, with a large farm on the right, continue up the path opposite; do the same at the next junction in the hamlet of Les Ornages. Cross the D34 (elevation 766), ignore the side paths to reach a junction

(20) At the “Croix Michel” sign, on the left, keep right towards Aveize Le Bourg via Rue de la Croix Michel. Ignore the side dead-ends and head for the church square.

(21) At the “Aveize Le Bourg” sign, head along Rue du Pin Berthier opposite, and join the junction with Rue des Cures.

(22) At the "Rues des Cures" sign, head left towards Orjolle. Stay on the road, ignoring the side paths and the road towards Tortigneux. When you reach a group of buildings, continue along the path opposite, through the woods, ignoring the side paths, and reach a junction (elevation 622).

(23) At the “Orjolle” sign, continue straight on towards Le Haut d’Orjolle. Ignore the path leading down to the left and join a road at a bend (elevation 615).

(24) At the “Le Haut d’Orjolle” sign, ignore the road leading down to the left. Continue 20 m straight ahead towards La Croix Trouilloux (sign removed), following the black arrow on a yellow label all the way. At the junction, take the wide path on the right. About 200 m after a left-hand bend, ignore the path branching off to the right. Continue straight ahead, then at the junction, turn right against the flow of traffic. Further up, join a road at a bend and follow it straight ahead. Turn right past a farm and join the D34 road.

(25) At the sign for "La Croix Trouilloux", head left towards Les Croisettes, following the D34 for 250 m. At the fork, leave the road and take a path on the right which crosses the Bois des Courtines to reach a junction.

(26) At the sign for "Les Croisettes", keep left onto the path towards Bel Air. At the entrance to Duerne, continue along Rue Montée de Fourvière and go straight on to a crossroads. Cross it towards a small square slightly to the right.

(27) At the “Bel Air” sign, follow the signs for Duerne Le Bourg (East). Keep to the left of the road through Duerne until you reach the initial fork.

(1) Continue straight ahead to reach the boules stadium car park (S/E).

A lovely walk to get back into the swing of things, without too many difficulties apart from the distance itself...
A mix of paths through the woods, a few quiet tarmac roads, a picnic table
near point 13 and very little elevation gain...
It took us 7 hours 25 minutes to cover 25.75 km, including a half-hour snack break.
Indeed, it’s perfectly doable for a keen walker, but as the previous comment mentioned, provided you’ve got the legs for it...
Thank you for this lovely route.

A lovely walk if you’re up for a bit of a hike, but it’s not difficult, so it’s suitable for most people.
Lots of paths through the woods with a detailed map
nothing but fun
