Parking is available at the Saint-Étienne Church car park or Square Gilbert Viala in Mélas (commune of Le Teil).
(S/E) From the school square, head towards the N102 to take Rue de la Liberté, located directly opposite the church. Cross the bridge over the Frayol, then continue straight on along the road (GR®42red and white markings). You will pass an old silkworm farm on your right. At a bend, you will find a huge, hundred-year-old cedar tree; continue along the main road climbing to your right towards the hamlet of La Rouvière. Keep going straight along the main road, keeping the hamlet of La Rouvière on your left at all times. You will reach a junction.
(1) Continue straight on, following the dual markings, climbing until you reach a forest track that will take you into a Mediterranean-style forest, characteristic of the area. At the first junction, and at all subsequent ones, stay on the yellow and white markings, so follow the path furthest to your right.
(2) At the Fork in the road, take the main path on the right, marked in yellow and white.
(3) Pass a clay pigeon shooting range on your right. Head down the forest track to the right until you reach a meadow.
(4) Stay on the main path. Walk past a house on your left and take the tarmac road again until you reach the junction you passed on the way out.
(1) Follow the route back to Mélas and the starting point of the walk. (S/E)
A great little hike, well marked, as is often the case in Ardèche, which is a hiker's paradise!
