Loop around Grandris

This loop will take you over hill and dale around Grandris. Don't miss: The memorial to the woodcutters who lost their lives in the storm of 1999 near the hospital and, a little further on, when you reach the calvary, you can admire the whole valley and the village before setting off on a series of picturesque little paths.

Description of the walk

Park in the Parking des Platanes car park.

(S/E) Take the street on the right, then right again onto Rue de la Mairie until you reach the post office, then turn left onto Route du Goutel and continue to Impasse Bellevue. At Impasse Bellevue, enjoy the first panoramic view of the walk.

(1) About 50 metres further on, take the path on the right. Continue on the right-hand side of the houses, then take Chemin du Goutel and turn right onto Route du Goutel until you reach Chemin de la Montagne.

(2) Take this small path on the right and continue along Plat Marson.

(3) At the place of the same name, take the path on the right (Vergonbet-du-Haut) to number 530, then take the dirt track on the left.

(4) Follow Chemin de la Maltirée until you reach Grandris Hospital and (if all goes well) pass it to arrive at the hospital entrance.
Sight to see: a wooden sculpture in memory of the woodcutters of the 1999 storm.

(5) After the footbridge, turn left onto Chemin de la Chaînée.
Younger visitors can enjoy some play equipment, while others can admire the magnificent panoramic view of the valley from the Calvary, in front of the small chapel. There are also several picnic tables.
Next, take Chemin de la Croix Popée on the left, and turn left again at the end of the road to cross Route de Grandris towards Le Clos and take the path that runs alongside this locality on the left.

(6) At the crossroads, take the right-hand path between the meadows to reach the Route de la Folletière. Follow this road to the right for a few dozen metres until you find the Route des Planches on your left.

(7) Take the Route des Planches, which is very pleasant as it is pedestrianised for part of its length, until you reach the Route de la Challière. Turn left onto it until you reach the Rivière de Grandris, cross the small bridge, then take the road on the right, then right again onto Chemin du Crêt de la Sarre, which leads to a picnic table (welcome to this stage of the walk).

(8) Take the Chemin du Crêt until you reach a dirt track on the left, which you follow all the way to a road. Turn right and continue for a few dozen metres, then follow the dirt track to the right of the methane production units. (This is the ugliest part of the walk.) At the end of the track, turn left towards the houses, then right onto the Route de la Rivière.

(9) Leave Chemin de la Rivière and follow the road to the right.

(10) Follow the dead-end road to the left and immediately turn left onto a path that runs along a wall until you reach Route de Thizy. Cross the road and take Chemin des Écoliers (the climb of the hike).

(11) A short detour to the left onto Rue Centrale will allow you to see a large building with an information panel explaining that it was once a maternity hospital. Return to the crossroads and continue along Rue Centrale. Return to the car park at Place des Platanes (S/E) via Rue de la Mairie.

Those who can do so will find it quicker to download the GPX file to their favourite app rather than printing the PDF, given the number of paths and junctions.

A beautiful route with lovely views of Grandris and its valley, an easy hike with no difficulties.
Much of the route is on small roads with no traffic, and we would have liked a few more nature trails, but that didn't spoil our enjoyment.
On Sunday 4 August 2025, during the day, we only came across one group (very friendly) of four hikers.
