Loop around Grandris

This loop will take you over hill and dale around Grandris. Don't miss: The memorial to the woodcutters who lost their lives in the storm of 1999 near the hospital and, a little further on, when you reach the calvary, you can admire the whole valley and the village before setting off on a series of picturesque little paths.

Description of the walk

Park at the Place des Platanes car park.

(S/E) Take the street on the right, then turn right again onto Rue de la Mairie until you reach the post office, then turn left onto Route du Goutel and continue to Impasse Bellevue. At Impasse Bellevue, enjoy the first panoramic view of the walk.

(1) About fifty metres further on, take the path on the right. Continue to the right of the houses, then along Chemin du Goutel, rejoining Route du Goutel on the right until you reach Chemin de la Montagne.

(2) Take this small path on the right and continue along Plat Marson.

(3) At the place of the same name, take the path on the right (Vergonbet-du-Haut) until you reach number 530, then take the dirt track on the left.

(4) Follow Chemin de la Maltirée to Grandris Hospital and, (if all goes well) go past it to reach the hospital entrance.
Notable sight: a wooden sculpture in memory of the loggers who lost their lives in the 1999 storm.

(5) After the footbridge, turn left onto Chemin de la Chaînée.
Younger visitors can enjoy some play equipment provided for them, whilst others can take in the magnificent panoramic view of the entire valley from the wayside shrine, in front of the small chapel. There are also several picnic tables.
Then, take Chemin de la Croix Popée on the left, and turn left again at the end of the path to cross Route de Grandris towards Le Clos, taking the path that runs alongside this hamlet on the left.

(6) At the crossroads, take the path furthest to the right, between the meadows, to reach the Route de la Folletière; follow this to the right for a few dozen metres until you find the Route des Planches on the left.

(7) Take Route des Planches, which is very pleasant as it is a pedestrian-priority route for part of the way, until you reach Route de la Challière. Turn left onto this road until you reach the Rivière de Grandris, which you cross via the small bridge.

(8) Take the road to the right, then turn right again onto the Chemin du Crêt de la Sarre, which leads to a picnic table (a welcome sight at this stage of the walk).

(9) Take the Chemin du Crêt until you reach a dirt track on the left; follow this all the way to a road. Turn right onto this road for a few dozen metres, then continue along the dirt track to the right of the anaerobic digestion units. (Right, this is the ugliest part of the walk.) At the end of the track, turn left towards the houses, then right onto the Route de la Rivière.

(10) Leave the Chemin de la Rivière and follow the road to the right.

(11) Follow the cul-de-sac to the left and immediately turn left onto a path running alongside a wall, until you reach Route de Thizy; cross this to take Chemin des Écoliers (the steepest part of the walk).

(12) A short detour to the left onto Rue Centrale will allow you to see a large building with an information panel detailing the presence of a former maternity hospital; then return to the crossroads and continue along Rue Centrale. Return to the car park at Place des Platanes (S/E) via Rue de la Mairie.

Those who can do so will find it quicker to download the GPX file to their favourite app rather than printing the PDF, given the number of paths and junctions.

Numerous panoramic views.
The woodcutters' memorial stone.

The little paths along the edge of the meadows

A beautiful route with lovely views of Grandris and its valley, an easy hike with no difficulties.
Much of the route is on small roads with no traffic, and we would have liked a few more nature trails, but that didn't spoil our enjoyment.
On Sunday 4 August 2025, during the day, we only came across one group (very friendly) of four hikers.
