Bocca di Capronale from the Fangu Valley

A hike that starts along the Fangu valley, climbs to Bocca di Capronale and descends via the transhumance trail.
In any case, do not attempt this if you are not used to covering this kind of distance and elevation gain.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Chapelle San-Pancraziu (Saint-Pancrace) in Barghiana.

(S/E) You then follow a pleasant track that climbs gently a short distance from the left bank of the Fango. You reach the confluence with the Ruisseau des Rocce. Turn right onto the track running along the left bank of this stream. Further on, you reach the Ponte di Rocce.

(1) Cross the bridge and follow the right bank of the stream. At a crossroads marked by a cross, continue straight ahead along the track to reach the Campottoli Rossi stream.

(2). Here, the track disappears, and for good reason: the bridge has collapsed. You need to go round the bridge on the right, which is easy to do. Carry on past two hairpin bends to reach a crossroads of paths.

(3) Here there are two options:
- take the transhumance path to the left towards Mont Estremo,
- continue the climb towards Bocca di Capronale.
It is this second option that is described here: follow the path which climbs initially through the forest before emerging onto the mountain pasture.

(4) You continue to climb until you reach the foot of the pass.

(5) We then begin the final ascent, where we can admire the walls running alongside the path. Impressive. A pleasant path, a little stony in places but fairly stable. We reach the pass.

(6) Beautiful view of the mountains opposite (Capu a Cuccula, Pointe de Cricche, Punta di Calavalonda). We begin the descent along the same path as the ascent until we reach the crossroads.

(3) We then turn right onto the transhumance trail.
A lovely, well-marked path offering fine views of the maquis, the ruins and the Fango stream flowing below. We arrive at Mont Estremo.

(7) Follow the road and turn sharp left, as if heading for the lodge (but without actually going there!).

(8) Cross the Fango bridge on the left and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The hike is estimated to take 9 hours and 15 minutes. It took me 6 hours and 30 minutes, and I’m a moderate walker. That includes the 3Ps: Pee, Photos and Picnic.
You’ll need at least 2 litres of water per person.
I wouldn’t recommend doing it when it’s hot.

Worth a visit

The Fangu Valley, the surrounding mountains, the retaining walls that support the path before reaching the pass. A lovely glimpse of a beautiful Corsican valley.

Route completed on 10/06/25 after two failed attempts, starting from Mont’estremo; easy at first but becoming more challenging higher up, with the path damaged three times by rockfalls. Be careful, however, of cows roaming freely on the path with their calves. You need to be fit and well-equipped as the upper part of the path is very stony, and above all, make sure you bring water as the springs have dried up. Don’t get caught out by the time (schedule) as the descent is long and tiring. From my experience with my brother, we took our time on the ascent (a 6-hour walk instead of the advertised 3½ hours) and, for safety’s sake, descended via a track of nearly 7 km leading to the village of BARGHIANA, as visibility was poor after 9.15 pm (+8 hours). Otherwise, the landscape is very varied and pleasant, with flowers in the final few kilometres.

This is an exceptional hike through the heart of Wild Corsica. We did this hike over two days so we could enjoy spending a night at the Puscaghia mountain refuge. The refuge is reached via a one-hour descent from the pass. It is beautifully situated in an enchanting spot with a spring, a river (the Lonca) and a lovely refuge, run with kindness and expertise by Pauline, who will prepare delicious meals using produce from her vegetable garden.
There is very little human impact in this area; the charm is complete.

There are two springs along the route, which is very welcome. Set off early to enjoy the shade. Magnificent views. The transhumance path is easy going uphill, but the descent is a bit trickier due to the stones on the trail.
A lovely walk, highly recommended.
