Bocca di Melza and the Parma sheepfolds

A beautiful hike through the Filosorma forest with a sublime view of the Gulf of Porto and the Piana calanques from the summit of Bocca di Melza, passing by the abandoned sheepfolds of Parma.
An impressive mule track on the approach to the pass.
A wonderful glimpse of this Corsica, steeped in history and boasting marvellous landscapes.
Apparently, in April you can find peonies at the sheepfolds.

Description of the walk

Park before the Pont de Perticatu on the right.

(S/E) Cross the bridge on foot.
Take the track on the right signposted for Boca di Melza, marked in orange. A gentle climb along the right bank of the Perticatu stream. Reach a crossroads of paths.

(1) Leave the path to Pirio on your left and take the track that continues straight ahead and climbs gently. You’ll reach a junction of two tracks.

(2) At the bend, take the track on the right which continues to follow the stream on a gentle slope.

(3) Just before the famous ruined bridge at Orzale, take the path that climbs to the left and goes round the bridge. Ford the stream. No worries as there is little water. From there, find a path that starts to climb steeply and winds through tall scrub and holm oaks.

(4) At the junction with the panoramic path, veer slightly to the right and continue climbing. Between this point and the pass, it is a magnificent mule track with impressive stone retaining walls. Reach the Col de Bocca di Melza.
Here, you’ll be rewarded with a splendid view of the Piana calanques.

(5) Continue along the path on the left: be careful, as there are no more markings and the path sometimes disappears. Look for the path, which is marked with a few cairns and visible at times, to climb up towards the sheepfolds.
At the first sheepfolds, the path continues a little higher up to the left and there are no more cairns, but the other sheepfolds are visible and the path is discernible. The terrain is a sort of meadow. It is easy to walk across it to reach the sheepfolds, which, unfortunately, are in ruins.

(6) Follow the route you took on the way up to return to the starting point (S/E).

  5. 4 : km 5.14 - alt. 606 m - Junction with the panoramic path
  6. 5 : km 7.23 - alt. 774 m - Bocca di Melza Pass

  8. S/E : km 16.82 - alt. 117 m - Car park at Pont de Perticatu

Notes

Make sure you take enough water (2 litres).
I didn’t see any springs along the way.

Few difficult sections. After the pass (5), there is no marked path on the IGN map, but you can find your way to the sheepfolds using cairns and a path that is sometimes visible. It’s well worth it!!!

A route that’s rarely used and, above all, not maintained, with numerous sections overgrown with brambles and juniper thorns. We set off late, with temperatures exceeding 32 degrees, but luckily we crossed the river twice, which allowed us to cool off. There was a stunning view of Porto Golf Course from the summit, and we carried on to the ruined sheepfolds.
A brilliant hike, and it’s a real shame that this path isn’t maintained as it’s starting to disappear 😮‍💨

Please note that the alpine route, which appears to form a circular route, has not been maintained for years and is dangerous. Do not use it.

I don’t think this route is used by hikers very often, and it isn’t maintained beyond waypoint 2.
You then find yourself in fairly dense vegetation right up to waypoint no. 4. Perhaps the alternative route is better maintained? After that, it’s a bit less so, but you should still wear trousers to avoid being scratched by the broom.
If you put these aspects aside, the pass is pleasant, as is the view during the descent. The section of forest track is quite long but pleasant.
Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this hike as much as I’d imagined, largely due to the lack of maintenance on the paths.
