Family walk at the Vire-Court site

This circular loop, mainly through the forest, offers beautiful views of the meandering Odet river and a stunning vista of Kerambleïz Castle perched on the hilltop.
Also worth discovering is the Rossulien Mill, which was restored in 2020 and is now operational (free to visit).

Description of the walk

Access: From Quimper, take the D20 called "Route des Châteaux" and follow it towards Plomelin. Just after the Kroaz an Trébé crossroads, turn left (signposted Moulin de Rossulien, Odet).
The large car park is signposted on the left.

PR Bourg et Garenne marked in yellow

(S/E) At the end of the car park, continue across the grassy area with picnic tables and you will come to a road that is closed to all but authorised users. Pass the entrance to the Château de Kerambleïz (private) on your left and note the old wash house on your left. You will come to a fork near a footbridge over the stream that feeds the mill.

Off the marked trail

(1) Ignore this footbridge for now and continue downhill to reach the Rossulien slipway, the embarkation point for water sports. Viewpoint over the Odet. Do not go too far down as the slipway can be slippery due to clay and seaweed.

(2) Turn around and, on your way back up, take the stairs on the left to reach the Rossulien Mill, already mentioned on Cassini's map in 1750 and restored in 2020 to working order (free to visit). Continue to the footbridge (picnic table).

PR Bourg et Garenne marked in yellow

(1) Cross the footbridge, turn left and take the wide path into the woods. On your left, you will see the pipe that carries water to the mill wheel. Continue straight ahead until you reach a fork in the path.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the wide path overlooking the river, leaving the path on the right, which will be the return route. You will come to a rocky outcrop on the left, which offers a beautiful view of the river bend (Saut de la Pucelle, explanation below). Please note: this area is not secure and is not suitable for children.
Continue along this wide path until you reach another rocky outcrop, which can be accessed via a staircase. Caution! This area is not secure and is not suitable for children.

A little further on, ignore a path leading off to the right and continue to a signpost before a staircase. Ignore the next path on the right and continue to the left until you reach the banks of the Odet opposite the Vire-Court, the name given to this very sharp bend in the river which causes strong currents and whirlpools.

(4) Go back up the path and follow it to the left. It becomes narrower and is covered with heather in July. You will arrive at a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the meander (signpost).

No markings

(5) Leave the path along the river and turn right at the hairpin bend to climb into the woods (yellow cross). Follow this beautiful stone path which runs alongside the fence of Rosssulien Castle, which you will never see. Ignore the two paths that branch off to the right and continue climbing steadily until you reach a flat area offering a view of Kerambleïz Castle perched on the hilltop.
Begin a steady descent to the path along the Odet river.

(3) Turn left and retrace your steps in the opposite direction.

(1) At the road, go up to the left to reach the Rossulien car park (S/E).

Notes

The path between (3) and (5) goes up and down: watch out for stones and roots sticking out of the ground.
Take care with young children.
The section between (5) and (3) is much more even.
This site is regularly very popular with the people of Quimper.

Rossulien Mill
Kerambleïz Castle

Saut de la Pucelle. This is the name of the promontory overlooking the Vire-Court. Legend has it that a young girl, pursued by a lecherous monk, threw herself off the rock, which is about twelve metres high. It is said that a supernatural hand enabled her to reach the other bank and escape from her awful suitor. He drowned when he plunged into the Odet.

A short, very pleasant walk that takes you along the Odet and offers views of the river from a path through the forest. However, the first part of the route, which leads down to the riverbank and back, is less interesting.

Hello,
A very pleasant route that we did yesterday before the heavy afternoon rain, allowing us to enjoy some fresh sea air and a picnic next to the mill!
The mill was closed, so we couldn't buy any flour.
I'm trying to contact the association for more information.
To be continued.
Kind regards

A family outing, so there are quite a few people around. But the views are splendid!

Hello,
I have just read your review of this hike.
I clearly indicated how to access the car park from the D20, known as the "route des châteaux" (castle road), as this is the easiest landmark.
As for the number of visitors, I noted this in the practical information section.
What's more, on a weekend in August, it's inevitable, as with many sites that are easily accessible to families.

Best regards

So here is my report on this hike.
It all started badly in Plomelin, with no signs to the Rossulien car park.
This car park is very busy because it provides access to several other activities besides hiking, such as visits to two sites.
The car park has a ridiculously small capacity, especially at this time of year, and I will come back to this later in my report.
In fact, wanting to see this area, I found another access point to join the hiking route. It's worth the detour, the setting is magnificent, and I would do it at a less busy time of year, without crowds of people on leashes and strollers, to fully enjoy it.
After a good hour and a quarter of hiking, on my way back and passing near the initial car park, it was complete chaos. Vehicles were parked haphazardly, endangering pedestrians and drivers' visibility at two intersections on the D 20. In terms of safety, the Plomelin town hall has serious concerns...
