Description of the walk

Car park in front of the Menhirs Hent Sant Philibert Distillery

YellowPR® markings

With your back to the car park, head towards the menhirs, go round them, cross the small stone bridge and continue along the very well-marked path heading south-east then north-east.

(1) Turn left towards the Kerneven Work-Based Support Centre, walk past the greenhouses and turn left again to go round the buildings. Just before the roundabout, head right to walk along the street and follow the path on the right leading to Saint-Philibert Chapel.

(2) Walk past the chapel and continue by turning left. Just here, slightly set back, is the fountain, which is unfortunately unmarked. At the road, ignore thePR® signposting which heads off to the right.

Off the marked trail: A few rare signposts from an old route called “Entre deux moulins”.

(3): Turn left onto the small road Hent Kervouyen and continue due north until the next T-junction.

(4) At the first signpost for Kerguel, turn right and continue along this small road to the hamlet.

(5) At the start of a path, there is another signpost. Take this wide path which crosses a wooded area. Keep heading north-east and, at each three-way junction, take the path on the right. You will reach a wetland area where the path turns right.

(6) Take a flight of steps, cross the D20 (Take care) and continue straight ahead towards Meilh Kerdour (Kerdour Mill). At the new signpost, leave the dead-end road on the left and continue straight ahead to reach the Anse de Kerdour, which you will follow.

::7: :At a gate, turn left and continue along a grassy path overlooking this branch of the Odet. On your right, you’ll see modern houses and beautifully landscaped grounds.

(8) Continue along this path (view of Kerdour Castle on the other side of the cove) until you reach a metal gate.

(9) This section is closed from 1 October to 31 March to protect wintering birds. (See the ‘Practical Information’ section for an alternative route in this case.)
Follow the riverbank, keeping a wire fence on your right. You will reach another metal gate.
Cross the small dam separating the pond from the river and turn left to reach the footbridge at the Trois Tourtes site

(10). Retrace your steps and begin the walk around the pond. At the far end, take the boardwalk to the right and you’ll reach a large grassy area.

(11) Head right to join a path that leads onto a road; follow this road, which is the same one taken on the way out.

(12) Turn left into a housing estate, then turn right to rejoin the small Route Hent Polhoad, which is marked by a double row of beech trees (photo). Follow this road via a path on the left and continue to the junction with the D20 at the Polhoad bus stop.

(13) Cross this road with care, head left for a few metres then turn right. The path, marked by the ‘no motorised vehicles’ sign, leads off to the right, rejoining the route taken on the way out at point (6).
Follow this path, taking the right-hand track at each three-way junction. Pass points (5) and (4), where you turn left. Follow this small road,

(3) Pass a and arrive at Kervouyen Farm.

YellowPR® signposting

Just after this farm, look out for a small fountain on the left, next to an old wash house. To date, only the fountain has been restored. Continue along this sunken path, which joins a road before leading to the Hent Trébé road.
Turn right towards Plomelin, whose tall bell tower is visible. Continue along this road, ignoring a path on the right, and carry on straight ahead. At the signpost, turn right into the Park Ar Menhir estate. At the end of the street, continue along the path leading towards the menhirs to reach the car park (S/E).

Alternative route for the period 1 October to 31 March:
(8) At this new marker, head up to the right to join the road leading to the Porrajen housing estate. Take this road to the right, then at the next junction, turn left. Follow this road, which passes through several residential areas. Keep heading south-east and ignore the various roads on both the right and left.

At a bend marked by a speed bump, turn into the cul-de-sac with a yellow marking to descend towards L'Étang de Kerbernez. At the pond, turn left and follow the wide path that takes you round it, rejoining the original route at the small dam.

Worth a visit

Saint-Philibert Chapel: Set in lush greenery, with a Latin cross plan and a rounded apse, the chapel was built between 1621 and 1684.
Beautiful sunken paths through wooded areas.
Kerdour cove, a branch of the Odet.
Kerbernez Pond.

Les Trois Tourtes: The rock at the end of the footbridge is famous for its legend, the legend of the Three Pies.
"The keeper’s wife was carrying three pies as she returned home by boat when Saint Cadou asked her for alms. The miserly woman refused. Saint Cadou found himself on dry land, the boat sank, the woman drowned and the three pies were turned to stone. Two of these stones are still visible at the tip of the headland, and on certain nights you can hear the poor woman’s soul wailing!”
(The keeper’s wife: There is a keeper’s house to the south of the rock)

A very pleasant route along sunken paths and the banks of the Odet
A section of the walk done in both directions, and a bit too many roads for my liking, but sometimes there are no other routes to make a circular route
I would have preferred to walk along the other bank of the pond, which seemed a bit more ‘wild’
Thanks!

A very pleasant route – it’s a shame you can’t do the full circuit; a section is closed from December to 31 March.

Admittedly, my assessment is a bit harsh; this is no doubt due to the path being blocked by that rather stubborn farmer, and having to walk back and forth on tarmac, not to mention the aggressive dogs (though I must mention a lovely neighbour who showed me the way to the school).
Otherwise, I find this site remarkable and am starting to use it regularly.
Kind regards

Thank you for your comment and suggestions.

My initial idea was to start from the Rossulien car park, follow the path that goes round the Château and Kerambleiz, and then head down to the banks of the Odet at Kergren.
This would have made for a lovely circular pattern.
Unfortunately, when I went to check the area, I discovered that the path at Kergren is no longer accessible (I’ve been told there’s an issue between the farmer and Plomelin Town Hall), so I decided to start from Plomelin instead, as I was familiar with the parking options there.
I hadn’t thought of starting from Saint-Philibert: I’ll look into it and make the necessary changes.

You’re right to say I should specify on (4) not to follow the yellow markings. In my mind, as I’d subsequently indicated ‘No markings’, I didn’t think it necessary to point this out. I’ll do so now for clarity.

I’m familiar with the path that cuts through the grounds of the Kerbernez horticultural college, but as it’s private property, I couldn’t include it. It’s a ‘grace period’, but I can’t mention it given that this hike may be undertaken by groups.

I didn’t understand why you marked the route on the map as “moderate”. On the IGN topographic map, there is no visible route, and the IGN satellite view provides no landmarks as it is a wooded area.
I don’t use a GPS and I redraw my route manually on the map.

Kind regards

FLOCH.

There’s little point in setting off from the centre of Plomelin (unless you’re a fan of housing estates and/or tarmac).
Starting from St Philibert’s Chapel seems better to me. The fountain is currently being refurbished.
An important note regarding point 4: please specify that you must absolutely not follow the yellow markings (which is what I did...)
I took a path that cuts through the grounds of the Kerbernez horticultural college – brilliant.
Worth doing again
Best regards
