Route along the banks of the Odet, then around Plomelin: passing the newly renovated Rossulien Mill, with a fine view of Kerambleiz Castle, one of the many castles overlooking this small coastal river.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Plomelin Town Hall.

(S/E) Leave the car park via the small garden on the right, walk round the Lucie Aubrac School, pass by a wayside cross and enter the car park of the Socio-Cultural Centre, “Espace Kerne” Sports Complex. Walk round the building on the left and join the path running alongside the sports pitches.

(1) Follow this path, which runs alongside the various football pitches; at the end, continue through a green space with a children’s playground and a fountain. Exit at the roundabout and follow the road to the left.

(2) At a place called Kerflam, turn left: the signpost is obscured by the green and yellow bins. Continue along a dead-end road which leads into a long avenue of beech trees. Continue eastwards until you reach the D 20, which you should cross with care.

(3) Next to a path leading to Rossulien Castle, veer slightly to the right, go through a gate and take a stony path marked by a sign prohibiting mopeds and horses. Look out for the first signpost indicating ‘Moulin de Rossulien’. Follow this path through the woods, which turns due south. You will reach a fork in the path.

(4) Turn left to follow the path which overlooks the Odet and continue along this path, which offers occasional unobstructed views of the river, such as the fairly tight meander known as “les Vire-Court”. Cross a stream and reach a large signpost offering a choice between the coastal path and the forest path.

(5) Head up to the left along this lovely stony path which follows the boundary fence of Rossulien Castle, which you never actually see. Ignore the two paths branching off to the right and continue the steady climb until you reach a flat stretch offering a view of Kerambleïz Castle perched on the hilltop. Begin a steady descent to the path running alongside the River Odet. Continue left along this path. Note, on your right, the water channel that carries water to the wheel of the Rossulien Mill, and you’ll reach a footbridge.

(6) Cross the stream and turn right towards the mill. Take the steps on the right leading up to Rossulien Mill, which was already marked on Cassini’s map in 1750 and restored to working order in 2020 (self-guided tour). Continue downhill to reach the Rossulien jetty, the embarkation point for water sports. There is a viewpoint overlooking the Odet. Do not go too far down as the jetty can be slippery due to clay and seaweed.

(7) Turn back and, at the signpost marked ‘Escalier du Marquis’, take the small staircase on the right, then continue along the path that runs alongside the river. Carry on, following the wire fence on the left which marks the boundary of the Château de Kerambleiz estate. You’ll reach a small cove which you should go round by crossing a stream: on the left, there’s a lovely view of the château and, on the right, an old wash house. Continue to the right, climbing the ‘Escalier du Marquis’ – a staircase made of wooden logs – until you reach a road which you should follow to the left.

At the hamlet of Kervéven, continue along the road which veers to the left. Pass the turn-off for Kerrrien on your right and carry on straight ahead until you reach the junction with the D 20, at the hamlet of La Croix de Trébé.
Cross this road with care and continue straight on towards Plomelin. Look out for a partially broken cross on the right at the entrance to the Trébé farm. Continue until you reach a detached house on the right.

(8) Turn right at the gable end of the house and continue along the wide path that follows on from there. Cross a stream (with an old wash house on the right) and arrive at a small hamlet. Follow the road for about a hundred metres.

(9) Turn left onto a path running alongside a meadow. At a bend, look out for a fountain set back on the left. Continue along this path, which leads to the Saint-Philibert Chapel. Carry on along the small road towards a cross. Turn left onto the path running alongside the road and arrive at a roundabout.

(10) Turn left towards the Kernevenn C.A.T., keeping a housing estate under construction (October 2021) on your right. Turn right at the greenhouses and continue straight on along the wide path which leads to the road towards the village of Plomelin (the church spire is clearly visible). Follow this road to the right for about a hundred metres.

(11) Just before the road sign marking the entrance to the village of Plomelin, turn left into Rue Hent Victor Roussin. Continue straight on between the houses to follow a path (not shown on the IGN map) which turns right, running alongside a stream. Follow this path, part of which is boardwalk over the wetland. At the junction of the paths, head up Allée du 19 Mars 1962, which runs behind the school and leads to the town hall car park (S/E).

Big problem: the path to points 7 or 8 was closed – I can’t remember the exact numbers off the top of my head (near a house; it was already very difficult to find the start of the path) – and then it was completely blocked off, I suppose by the owner. I had to turn back and take the road to get back to the starting point, as I couldn’t find where to pick up the route again.

We completed this walk as far as marker 6 (Moulin de Roussulien +++), where we continued westwards past the golf course and Kerbernez Pond. From the hamlet of Kerflam and its avenue of beech trees, we discovered a magnificent route, with the vegetation lending the Odet a striking shade of green; the views unfolded as the path wound its way, offering magical panoramas as it meandered at just the right height to fully appreciate the riverbanks. The Rossulien Mill, with the fascinating story of its restoration and the explanations about flour production, adds historical interest to this stage of the walk.
And, as a seasonal anecdote, we treated ourselves to some excellent blackberries that dotted our route.
Thank you, Mr LE FLOCH

A lovely outing, rounded off with “west of Plomelin via the golf course…” to make it a full day.
We followed the route as close as possible to the Odet, which was very easy to navigate.
But why on earth doesn’t the IGN show certain paths that are clearly well-marked and obviously old?
A route description is essential.
