A walk in the Montsaugeonnais at the crossroads of three provinces

On the borders of Champagne, Burgundy and Franche-Comté, the Domaine du Muid Montsaugeonnais covers 13 hectares, spread across the territories of four communes: Chatoillenot, Montsaugeon, Rivière-les-Fosses and Vaux-sous-Aubigny.

Abandoned since the outbreak of phylloxera in the late 19th century, the vineyard was revived in 1988 thanks to the Chevaliers du Montsaugeonnais.

Description of the walk

Rue de Verdun car park opposite the ADMR.

(S/E) After crossing the Badin, turn right to discover the Vaux-sous-Aubigny wash house.

(1) Continue along the street to the left and rejoin the road to the right to leave the village via the D300. At the exit, take the first path on the right: Impasse Charrière. PR®® signposting. At the first fork, turn left onto the path that climbs up to the edge of the woods.

(2) When you reach a dirt track, continue to the right heading north-west. At the next junction (elevation 342), continue to the right onto the path that descends. Stay on this path, almost all the way to Chatoillenot, keeping a north-westerly direction. To the right of this route, as you walk, you will see a spring. Continue on to the wayside cross.

(3) Take the dirt track leading down to the right towards Moulin du Haut and the Fontaine Saint-Éloi (you will leave thePR®® marked trail).

(4) Here you’ll find two picnic tables. From the picnic area, head up towards the village via Rue du Lavoir and ignore the first alleyway on the right lined with stone walls. Walk up towards the village centre.
Turn right before the church and the cemetery and follow Rue Joseph Cressot. Ignore the lane on the right.

(5) Shortly afterwards, you will see on the right the house where Joseph Cressot (1882–1954; man of letters) was born, followed by the 18th-century château. Return to the picnic area.

(4) Take the D140 road on the right, towards Vaux-sous-Aubigny. After the Badin bridge, take the small path that climbs to the left to rejoin the CD299. Follow it to the left as far as the wayside shrine.

(6) Stay on the CD299 (light traffic). Cross the wooded area of Le Vernoi and look for a path on the right.

(7) Turn right (south-west). At the end of this path, at the roundabout, take the path that climbs to the left (south-east). At the first junction, turn left (east-north-east). Stay on this path until you reach the entrance to the village of Prauthoy. Continue straight ahead onto Chemin des Brosses. Follow this road, then, after the secondary school, carry on until the second right (Chemin du Stade).

(8) Turn right and, at the Stop sign, veer right before the Forest House, still on Chemin du Stade.
When you reach a crossroads, turn left until you reach an altitude of 349m. At the crossroads, turn right and stay on this path to return to the entrance to Vaux-sous-Aubigny. At the water tower, at the junction, continue straight on along the white path.

(9) At the next crossroads, turn left towards Saint-Symphorien Church (you can walk around the church) then take the path that runs alongside the cemetery (signposted ‘panorama’). Continue to the orientation table. Continue down the path to the right of the orientation table, then take the white path, turn right and arrive at Rue des Vignes.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(10) Turn left until you reach the D974 road. Cross this road carefully and continue straight ahead, keeping to the left on the footpath.

(11) At the next junction, take the D300 on the left towards Montsaugeon. At the level crossing, turn right and cross it carefully, even if there are few trains. Continue along the road and at the next junction, turn right towards the village.

(12) At the junction before the pond, go straight on then turn left onto the road going uphill (Rue Vilain). Pass the Pas du Four on your right and arrive at a junction.

(13) Continue straight on along Rue de l’Église Notre-Dame until you reach the church.

(14) Walk back down to the previous junction.

(13) Turn left onto Rue du Châtelet: the market halls, the town houses. Pass the streets on your left and arrive at Rue de l'Étang.

(15) Turn right, then left to go round the pond and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(12) Turn left again towards Vaux-sous-Aubigny. Cross the level crossing again, bearing in mind that the path on the left before the crossing is off-limits (private SNCF track). Once you have crossed the level crossing, turn left.

(11) Continue straight on along the D300 to the station.

(16) Once past the station, at the junction, turn left then right before the railway bridge and go round the small pond, which will take you back to Rue de la Gare. Turn left, cross the CD974 again at the pedestrian crossing, taking care. Walk past the church and head to the car park on Rue de Verdun (S/E).

Notes

If the church in Montsaugeon is closed, you can collect the key from the lodge at the bottom of the street.

For your information, if it’s raining, the school playground can provide shelter for your meal, or the Saint-Éloi Fountain, which is also a wash house near the Moulin du Haut.

Shorter alternative
(10) Continue straight on along a path that goes downhill to join Rue de la Tour.
Once on this street, turn right, then at the next junction turn left until you reach the car park.

Ideal in the rainy season: the quality of the paths (little mud) and the quiet roads are advantages.
We encountered hunters: no problems if you stay on the route (plus they are friendly).
For the return trip from Montsaugeon, there may be a slight variation: take the path just before the railway line, which also runs alongside it, to reach point 15 (tunnel).

Hello
Thank you for your comments.
It’s true that the tracks can sometimes change over time.
As for the section of the country road leading out of the village of Chatoillenot, it is possible to take the path on the left at the wayside shrine, but depending on the time of year and the crops, it can be difficult to find the path. That is why the route follows the road. However, everyone is free to alter the route as they see fit.
The section from Vaux to Montsaugeon isn’t much fun either.
That’s true, but there’s no solution there...
All the best and enjoy your walks along the paths.
Best regards.

In the village of Prauthoy, on the path to the stadium, do not go down to the stadium but turn right at the end of the straight stretch after the wayside cross. The forest has recently been cleared and the forest path is not very visible.

It’s a pleasant route, though the stretch of A-road just outside the village of Chatoillenot is perhaps a bit too long.

The stretch from Vaux to Montsaugeon (a lovely village) isn’t much fun either.

A pleasant route all the same
