Auvillar - Castet Arrouy

Thirty-fifth stage of the Way of St James. On this stage, you enter the Gers via Lomagne, this land of steep hills also known as ‘humpbacked Gascony’. This world-famous gastronomic region, home to foie gras and Armagnac, is also a land of captains, with its castles, fortified farms, redoubts, bastides, strongholds and more. Who hasn’t heard of d’Artagnan!
You will follow pretty paths running parallel to the road, lined with fruit trees (apples, pears, cherries, figs, hazelnuts) and cypresses.

Description of the walk

(S) Start this stage by continuing up the Chemin du Peyrat towards the centre of Auvillar. Turn left into Rue de la Fontaine, which continues as Rue des Nobles, to reach Place de la Halle. Cross the square towards the Tour de l’Horloge. Pass under the tower to reach the junction with the D11 (refreshments available at the Vival shop and the bakery).

(1) Continue straight on along Rue de la Sauvetat towards the post office. At the stop sign, cross the junction carefully and continue straight on towards Mansonville until you reach the communal water reservoir.

(2) Turn left towards Hautes Peyrères onto the small tarmac road, which leads onto a dirt track descending through the woods to join the Route de Bardigues (D11).

(3) Turn left, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau Profond and then pass under the A62 , taking care on the main road. Climb slowly through the countryside along the path that runs alongside the D11 to the small hamlet of Subressan.

(4) Continue towards Bardigues, passing under the high-voltage power line before reaching the entrance to Bardigues at the hamlet of Mareil.

(5) Continue along the D11, leaving the village of Bardigues on your left and passing the entrance to the Château de la Motte. Follow the B-road until you reach the sign marking the exit from the village of Bardigues.

(6) Turn right towards La Gravière/Ritournet on the Route des Banelles. Pass through the hamlets before reaching a junction directly beneath the high-voltage power line.

(7) Continue straight on along a dirt track leading down to the edge of a wood. Cross the D88 carefully to enter the department of Gers and head straight on towards Saint-Antoine. Pass the hamlet of Le Moulin to reach the junction with the D953.

(8) Cross the bridge over the Arrats and continue along the hard shoulder of the D953 until you reach the entrance to the village of Saint-Antoine. Then turn left towards the church. Shortly afterwards, take the first turn left then right to follow Rue de la Commanderie to the church.

(9) Continue straight on until you reach the town hall on the D953. Carry on for a further 500 m or so until you reach a left-hand bend and a fork in the road.

(10) Follow the signs for Les Pins/Ménebent onto the VC13 on the right and almost directly opposite, heading towards the woods. Cross the Ruisseau de Corneille and continue to the junction with the Route Fleurie des Pèlerins (VC4)

(11) Continue straight ahead. Pass the small hamlet of Collong, the Ruisseau de la Teilière and the hamlet of Cluset in succession. At the stop sign, follow the D953 to the right for about twenty metres.

(12) Then turn left to cross the road towards the cemetery, then immediately right to reach the Church of Saint-Saturnin. Then walk past the castle. Return to the D953 and follow it to the left. Leave the village and continue along the road for about 600 m until you reach the sign indicating an intersection 200 m ahead.

(13) Turn left onto the dead-end road (CV17) towards the hamlet of Le Padouen. Soon after, turn right.

(14) Join the D953 and follow it to the left, taking a grassy path running parallel to it. Continue to the junction with the D281.

(15) Turn left to follow the path running alongside the main road for about 200 m, then veer left along a pine forest to pass the hamlet of Bourdette with its orientation table. Then rejoin the D953 at the ‘Give Way’ sign near the hamlet of Pelevent.

(16) Head left to enter the village of Miradoux. At the Stop sign, turn left towards Lectoure (provisions available at the petrol station’s grocery shop and bakery).

(17) Pass the church of Miradoux on your right and leave the village.

(18) Cross the D525 on the left-hand side and, via the path running alongside the D23, follow the red and white markings of the GR®65, which takes you through the hills towards Castet-Arrouy. Pass Caillavet and then the junction with the D953 before reaching a pond, visible to the right of the D23.

(19) Turn left onto the small tarmac road climbing through fields to the top of the hill, then continue downhill to a T-junction.

(20) Continue right down the hill until you rejoin the D23.

(21) Carry on to the left, cross the River Auroue and continue along the path that runs alongside the D23 to the first house in the village of Castet-Arrouy.

(22) Turn left, following the signs for Puy-en-Velay, onto the Route des Érables. At the junction, turn right towards the communal lodge. Enter the village to arrive at a picnic area next to the cemetery at the foot of the church.

Worth a visit

Village of Saint-Antoine: At the edge of the village, a beautiful fountain evokes the Way of St James. There you can read this phrase: “Go, pilgrim, continue your quest; go on your way, let nothing stop you. With an awakened heart, there lies your treasure.”

The village of Flamarens and its 13th-century castle.

As with the "Moissac–Auvillar" route, the trail is very manageable, although the "DIFFICULT" rating in the description is somewhat misleading. Admittedly, after the ups and downs of the Aubrac, the flat terrain and the exposure to the sun do make the going a bit more… difficult, or even tedious, but it really depends on the season
