The D103 runs through the village of Saint-Denis from east to west. In the centre of the village, you’ll find a few car parks, and there’s space along the road to leave your cars.
(S/E) Start the walk by continuing westwards along the road, then take the first road on the right which climbs up towards the cemetery. Go round the cemetery on the right and continue along this road until you reach the football pitch on your right.
(1) The tarmac road ends here and you continue straight on along a stony track. At the first fork, turn right, leave a path on your right and continue to a second fork. Take the smaller path on the left and leave the main track which climbs up to the Picotalen farm. This path climbs gently for about 1 km through open woodland. And suddenly you will see a wall ahead of you, which is none other than the Saint-Denis dam.
(2) Cross the Alzeau via the bridge on the left and walk up to the end of the dam. Then follow the path that goes round the lake on the left.
(3) Cross the Alzeau at the second bridge and continue round the lake. 150m after the bridge, you’ll see a pretty little waterfall on your left; carry on. It’s impossible to get lost as the lake will always be on your right.
(4) You arrive at the other end of the dam. Just before the road, take a path on the left that goes uphill and is very stony. Follow this path, which brings you back near the road. But, once again, do not take the road; instead, continue along the grassy path on the left. Keep going straight ahead.
(5) Keep to the right, heading due south along a narrow single-track path through the grass and wildflowers. When you reach the road, turn left and then right onto the D8. Enter the village and take the second street on the right, then the second on the left, and you’ll come out onto the D103. Turn right onto it and you’ll find your cars (S/E).
