Les Escoussols, Fraisse-Cabardès and Brousses

A walk through woods and fields. The first kilometre is a bit muddy after heavy rain.

Description of the walk

Between Villardonnel and Cuxac-Cabardès, on the D118, turn left onto the Route de Brousses, the D103. You can park at the second dirt track on your right. Please note there is limited space.

(S/E) Start the walk by crossing the road and taking a tractor track heading south-southeast. This track descends gently through woods and fields.

(1) Turn right. Further on, turn left at a right angle and continue south-east along a track that is first stony and then tarmac-surfaced, running between two fields.

(2) There is a small wood on your right and the start of a path on the right. Follow this path down, which crosses and then runs alongside the Moureau stream.

(3) At a fork, go up to the right. At the next junction, turn left downhill. Join a small road on the right and head towards the village of Fraisse-Cabardès. Cross the village, turning right at every junction, pass by a statue of the Virgin Mary and continue on the D203 to the right to leave the village.

(4) At the next crossroads, turn right towards Les Bouriettes. Continue along this road.

(5) At the end of a large right-hand bend, take the path on the left which is bordered by a two-metre-high wire fence. Continue along this fence until you see the first houses of Brousses. At the crossroads, take the path on the right. You will come to the D103; cross it. Opposite, take a passageway between the houses which leads diagonally to the left.

(6) You are now on Rue des Lavandières: turn right and head up towards the town hall. The street turns into a grassy path until you reach Rue de la Mairie, which you take on the right. Continue along this street until you reach a fork.

(7) Then turn right onto Chemin de l'Hort and leave it after a few metres to follow a tractor track to the left. Walk alongside an old quarry and continue to a track suitable for vehicles, which you follow to the right for 100m.

(8) Turn right again onto a dirt track and you will arrive at the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

It would be a shame to visit Brousses without seeing the Paper Mill. This mill, which was still producing cardboard some thirty years ago, has been converted by the owners into a museum offering demonstrations and hands-on workshops. A beautiful arboretum lines the path leading to it.
This granite-rich region led to the opening of a quarry a long time ago. But the poor quality of the granite meant it could not compete with the Sidobre granite, less than 100 km away.

Hello fellow hikers. Yes, it’s a lovely walk, well signposted, with a section of the path in Brousse lined with stunning, fragrant flowering mimosas. We had some rain, but the walk is lovely, with magnificent groves of young cedars
and in Brousse Haut, don’t miss the wash house library – a brilliant idea from the local council.
See you soon, Petitbob.
Thanks, Visorando.

A lovely, fairly varied walk: paths and narrow tracks, woods and fields on the hillsides. Brousses is a pretty little village dotted with huge granite boulders, and a pleasant place to stroll through.
It’s a shame that the route description is sometimes a bit vague, but it’s no big deal: we always managed to find our way quite quickly.

Hello,
A lovely walk.
We missed point 2, which meant we had to take a detour via Fraïsse-Cabardès
with a lot of the route on roads.
Thanks
See you soon

Hello.
Thanks to the moderator who made quite significant changes to the description (that’s why I gave it a ‘very good’ rating...).
At this point (5), I’m not quite sure at which crossroads you’re supposed to turn right:

Continue along this fence until you see the first houses of Brousses. At the crossroads, take the right-hand path. Join the D103 and cross it. Opposite, take a passage between the houses that leads diagonally to the left.

Could you check this and let me know what you think?
Thanks in advance
