Brousses - Between woods, meadows and heaths.

This walk was created by the association "Environnement, territoires et paysages" (Environment, Territories and Landscapes). Another description can be found at the Brousses town hall or at the paper mill.
Half of the route is on tarmac roads, but with wide, well-mowed verges that allow you to walk on the grass. This walk is particularly enjoyable after heavy rainfall, as in 2018/2019.

Description of the walk

Coming from the east, enter Brousses via the first street, Rue des Lavandières, at the corner of the village hall. Immediately on your right, you will see a large Christ on a wrought iron cross. You can park at the foot of this cross in the grass.

(S/E) Join Rue des Lavandières and turn left down onto the D103. Turn right and continue for about 100 metres. Turn left onto Route de Fraïsse. Leave Chemin du Vieux Moulin on your right.

(1) Turn right onto the road towards Camping du Martinet Rouge. Follow this road. Pass the campsite, Chalets de Brousses and Lauthier le Haut.

(2) A calvary half-hidden in the trees indicates a path to take on the left. Follow this path until you reach a tarmac road, which you take as a continuation of the path. At the next junction, keep left on the road.

(3) At the junction with the D48, cross over and take the track opposite. Follow it, keeping to your right.

(4) Continue right on this track, which will become less well maintained. Keep following the same path until you reach the village of Fraïsse-Cabardès. You will come to a tarmac road.

(5) Stay north of the village by turning onto Chemin des Cascaillous.

(6) At the T-junction, turn left onto a road that quickly becomes a forest path. Follow this path to the D203. Turn left onto it.

(7) Turn right onto Route des Bouriettes. This road is bordered on the left by a high fence.

(8) At a right-hand bend, leave the road and take a path on the left that continues along the tall fence. Follow this path without ever leaving the fence. After several large bends, you will arrive at the village of Brousses. Cross the D103 and pass between two houses on the opposite side, through the grass, to return to the parking area (S/E).

A lovely country walk. Good weather conditions.
As octogenarians, we really enjoyed this gentle and very pleasant route. It's great that the emphasis is on the rural aspect and the heath. Of course, it's a shame that there is a small section of tarmac, but that didn't really spoil our enjoyment of the walk. Beautiful views of the Pyrenees between 4 and 5 and of the Montagne Noire between 6 and 7. The detour via Fraisse-Cabardes is interesting and the church (well renovated and maintained) is worth a visit.
A little tip for those who "appreciate" the heath: also do the drystone shelter route in Aragon, it's very close by!

A bit of tarmac, but passing through charming areas, heaths...
Few viewpoints, but a feeling of being at the end of the world. A good time was had by all.

I did it in the opposite direction to the description. The trail is blocked in 8. You have to cross the football field and go down the D203 tarmac road to catch up with the trail 1 km further down, the entrance to which is not marked.
In summary, between Brousse and Fraïsse, the route should be reviewed and the signposting improved.
The rest of the trail is fine.

A very beautiful walk starting from Brousses and Villaret. You can find other equally enjoyable walks starting from Brousses at the village town hall.

A gentle afternoon hike in beautiful weather with varied scenery, covering just over 8 km.

Easy going as there was little or no elevation gain.

A very beautiful walk, the roads are quiet and the paths, mostly through woodland, are pleasant. However, it is best to visit in winter or mid-season, as summers can be hot in Cabardès.
And for those who have time, a visit to the paper mill is well worth it.
Thank you for this beautiful walk.
