Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the church in Belvés-de-Castillon.

(S/E) Turn left towards Pivert on the D119E6, and take the first road on the right for about 400 metres downhill.

(1) Take the path on the right and continue uphill to the road.

(2) Turn right onto the D119 until you reach the first X-shaped crossroads.

(3) Turn left onto Castagens Road on the left and continue along the road.

(4) Before reaching Peyfole, the road veers to the left. Continue straight ahead on the path through a beautiful woodland, cross the stream and at the X-junction continue straight ahead on the road that climbs uphill.

(5) At the fork, turn right towards the hamlet of Horable and pass under a power line. Cross through this hamlet.

(6) After the hamlet, turn onto the first road on the left for a few metres, then turn right to rejoin the road. Follow it on the left and when you reach the woods, turn right and go down the road. Cross the road and walk a few metres to the right.

(7) Take the path on the left that descends towards the hamlet of Lucas and join it.

(8) At the fork, turn right and follow the road to the top of the hill. Turn left onto Chemin de Lartigues and continue to thefirst bend on the left.

(9) Continue along the path on the right to the church car park (S/E).

Notes

Very important: this route may cross or follow other routes. It is tempting to follow the markers! Unless otherwise specified, do not stray from this route.
We are going off the beaten track. All the landmarks mentioned in the description (place names, castle names, but also high-voltage power lines, bridges, etc.) are shown on the corresponding IGN 1/25,000 map, but are not always shown on the reduced map.
We strongly recommend that you either purchase the map or use the app on a smartphone, which will also allow you to be geolocated at all times so you can track your movements accurately.
Please comply with all aspects of the "Visorando Charter".
We often cross private property, which is the only way to continue on such routes.
The use of walking sticks can be very useful and reassuring. In addition to providing stability, they improve the distribution of effort.

Worth a visit

Castagens Castle: We have no precise information about its origins.
It was originally surrounded by a rectangular enclosure with four towers at the corners. This enclosure has been partially destroyed, as has one of the towers.
The entrance gatehouse, whose door is defended by a bretèche, is flanked by a square pavilion containing a spiral staircase. The rectangular dwelling is covered by a high gabled roof with flat tiles; the gable ramps are decorated with crockets.
This main building may date back to the late 15th or early 16th century, but it has been considerably modified. The gatehouse must be from the late 16th century...".
Located on one of the highest points of the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, overlooking the Dordogne valley. Its single vineyard gives it good homogeneity. It is planted exclusively on hillsides and thus benefits from natural drainage and excellent sunshine thanks to its south-west exposure.

Hike completed today under beautiful winter sunshine.
We had to alter the route slightly, mainly due to the presence of hunters, but thanks to the iPhone app, we were able to pick up the trail again a little further on.
Several comments on points 8 and 9: there was a large camp of "travellers", which made the route rather unpleasant: rubbish littered the road for a good kilometre (it felt like an open-air rubbish tip), a car rodeo on the route we took, which was not very reassuring as there was a risk of being hit, and the passage between points 8 and 9 was not maintained at all and therefore difficult to find. This passage was therefore not the most pleasant. It would be worth modifying the route to avoid this passage.
Otherwise, everything else was fine.

Very good route, only one section in poor condition requires a detour.

Beautiful hike. Be careful at point 8 in Lacoste, as the undergrowth is not maintained and is impassable. We had a bit of trouble getting back on track. It's better to turn right at Lucas to avoid this area littered with rubbish...

Hello, beautiful hike, very nice views, small downside on the forest path: be careful, the path
used by mountain bikes... and currently muddy... and trees across the path. Apart from that, a very
interesting trail...
