Around Poulgoazec, coastal port of Plouhinec

Audierne, a former fishing port, has been transformed into a marina.
Poulgoazec, opposite, has retained its coastal fishing activity.
This route begins with a tour of the port and its activities, then continues into the surrounding countryside.
The return journey is along the coastal path, which has been damaged in places by the sea.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near Poulgoazec church.
This small fishing port is located in the commune of Plouhinec, opposite Audierne.

GR®®34GR®® red and white markings

(S/E) With your back to the church, turn left towards Rue Toul à Zoner and, at the end, head down to the harbour esplanade. Note the memorial to those lost at sea on the left (plaques bearing names and a sculpture). Continue along the harbour esplanade, taking care if there is any activity.
Continue along a causeway (view of Audierne on the opposite bank).

(1) Turn right, walk past the kayaking and paddleboarding club, go round the former cannery (now a water sports centre) and arrive at a grassy esplanade where a collection of buoys used at sea has been created (information panel). Continue along Quai Jean Jade.

(2) Take a small flight of steps to slip into the narrow Rue de Guervian, which climbs steeply to join Rue Dixmude; follow this to the right, ignoring the streets on the right leading towards the residential areas. Continue to a Fork in the road where you turn left onto Rue Dupleix.

(3) Follow this small road as it winds through the countryside, running alongside a wooded, marshy area on your left. Cross a small road and continue straight ahead along Chemin des Tourterelles until the next junction. You’ll notice a hill opposite, the summit of which is pyramid-shaped, hence its name “la Pyramide”.

(4) Turn right to reach the hamlet of Saint-Dreyer; ignore a street on the left, turn into the next one, Rue de Saint-Dreyer, and continue for about a hundred metres.

(5) Turn right onto Rue de Saint-Guénolé, continue along the track, pass a wash house and arrive at a road opposite Kersiny Beach. Follow this road to the right until you reach the start of the coastal path.

(6) Take the coastal path, passing Pointe Karreg Léon, Roz Lezarouan and its navigation mark. Shortly afterwards, due to a landslide, the coastal path is diverted for about 200 m via Rue des Goélands (follow the on-site markings).

(7) At the end of the street, rejoin the coastal path and continue with the shared entrance to the ports of Audierne and Poulgoazec directly ahead. Pass over some old blockhouses, then walk alongside the cemetery. The coastal path is diverted again via Rue Saint-Julien, which leads to the car park at Poulgoazec church (S/E).

Worth a visit

Saint-Julien Church.
In addition to the model of the ‘Saint-Julien’, the church in Poulgoazec is characterised by various stained-glass windows adorned with maritime motifs: a ship’s anchor, a boat, a lighthouse and a fish.
A statue of Saint Peter holding an anchor in one hand and an oar in the other stands near the altar.
The ex-voto is a four-masted square-rigged sailing vessel with a propeller. It dates from the early20th century and its name is visible on the bow.

Sailor’s shelter.

Monument to those lost at sea.
Buoy Depot.

Port: strictly inshore fishing, comprising three main trades: gillnetter, longliner and line fisherman.

A very easy and enjoyable walk. It’s interesting to explore the village of Plougoazec and see how it has developed, as well as to stroll through the farmland.

We enjoyed this walk, which starts at the harbour. However, at point 2, we preferred to go back up Rue Jean Jade (or the previous street?), which allows you to enjoy the beacon conservatory. Several beacons are on display with explanatory panels along the street.
A short, very pleasant walk that combines the harbour area, countryside and seaside.

We found that the initial circular route was no longer interesting because there is major construction work on the embankment after the port. And since it brings us back to the starting point (the car park behind the church), we might as well start at 2!
Apart from that, the hike is pleasant, varied and easy.

Just a slight hesitation in finding Rue Dupleix, the extension of Rue Dixmude which runs alongside the square and Rue de Menez Veil (the name of the street was indicated late).
A very beautiful route between beautiful fishermen's houses, small country roads and an easy coastal path.

At the start of the hike, there is a remarkable documentary site on buoys and beacons.
The coastal path is not difficult.
Thank you for the information provided in the route description.
