Around Hordain

Park in the church car park on Rue des Écoles.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn left, pass the town hall, then turn right into Rue Jean Jaurès. At the three-way junction, stay on this road and ignore the turning on the right.

(1) At the intersection with Rue François Dubois, turn left and ignore the first two streets on the left. Continue to Rue Jules Ferry, turn right, ignore the two streets on the right and the next one on the left, then cross the Vieil Escaut bridge.

(2) At the junction with Chemin du Vieil Escaut, turn right. When you reach the Bouchain pond, follow the path on the left, then turn right.

(3) At the intersection with Rue Hubert Gallez, turn left. At the roundabout, turn right onto Rue César Dronsart, follow the EHPAD (retirement home) and then, in front of the fire and rescue centre, turn left onto Rue Georges Daix. Continue to the crossroads and turn right onto Rue Hubert Gallez.

(4) At the Place du Général Tholozé crossroads, turn left and cross the Escaut canal bridge. Go straight ahead at the first four crossroads and, at the three-way junction, turn left onto Route de Marquette.

(5) At the bend in the road by the cemetery, follow the pavement on the right and take the path to the D49. Cross the road and continue straight ahead to Chemin de Valenciennes, where you turn left.

(6) At the Route d'Abscon, turn left. At the next three-way junction, turn right onto Rue Roger Salengro (Marquette-en-Ostrevant) and ignore the junction on the right.

(7) At Rue Émile Zola, turn left and ignore the next small road. At the junction with Rue Louis Pasteur, turn left, pass the town hall and church, then turn right onto Rue Victor Hugo.

(8) At Rue Nicolas Galliez, turn left, avoiding any other junctions. At the intersection with Rue de Wavrechain, turn right and continue along Rue de Marquette until you reach Rue de Wasnes.

(9) Turn right , leaving the left-hand lane , then, in the bend, follow Rue de l'Église on the left , keeping to the right-hand side . Just after the church, turn left and go down the steps.

(10) At the bottom of the steps, turn right onto Rue de Paillencourt. Continue to the Canal de la Sensée, cross it and continue to the next fork.

(11) At this fork, make a sharp left turn to rejoin the canal, then follow it to the right. At the next intersection, follow the path along the bank and cross the wooden footbridge.

(12)When you reach the intersection with Rue Émile Chevalier, turn right and then immediately left, ignoring the side roads, to cross the Canal de l'Escaut.

(13) At Rue de la Rosière, turn left and, on leaving the town, turn left onto the footpath. At the bend, continue right along Rue Joliot Curie towards Hordain.

(14) Shortly afterwards, turn left onto a pedestrian path to reach Rue du Marais. Turn left onto Rue des Écoles, ignore the junction on the right and you will arrive at the church car park. (S/E)

The route is not difficult but is not signposted. The terrain is earth, grass, stones, pebbles and tarmac. Wear suitable footwear.
