Description of the walk

(S) From the Auberge de Salanfe, cross the dam and follow the easy path towards the Col d'Emaney. Ignore the path on the right and continue to a crossroads with a sign for Les Ottans.

(1) Keep heading towards Col d'Emaney, continue climbing and you will reach the Lac des Outtans junction.

(2) Ignore the path to the lake and continue straight ahead, following the valley that ends at the Col d'Emaney.

(3) Begin the descent and reach a crossroads of trails in the Vallon d'Emaney.

(4) Take the path opposite, climb up, pass a rocky outcrop, continue along the long valley and reach the Col de Barberine, which is clearly visible throughout the climb. Enjoy the beautiful view here.

(5) Begin a long descent and reach a crossroads slightly above Lac d'Emosson, indicated by the Barberine sign.

(6) Follow the track on the left along the lake towards the Col de la Gueulaz. Pass some barracks. Ignore the road that descends to the right and follow the road that climbs. Pass under afirst tunnel. Reach asecond tunnel.

(7) Take it, but be careful as it is long and poorly lit. Turn right at the exit to quickly reach the Col de la Gueulaz and its viewpoint above the dam.

(8) Follow the signs for Vieux Emosson, turning left onto the road downhill, which is closed to traffic by a barrier. Cross the dam and continue along the road, following the Emosson lake and ignoring the two paths on the left. Cross the Nant de Dranse stream and you will come to the start of a path.

(9) Take the path towards Cabane du Vieux Emosson and rejoin the road. Follow this road uphill to reach Cabane du Vieux Emosson, today's destination (E).

A lovely climb above Lac de Salanfe in the clouds and rain; it's a change and it's good to get the cape out a bit! First Elnaney pass in the wind and mist. The next valley is impressive too, with a fine descent and a dry climb immediately afterwards. We end up crossing a raging torrent below the pass with overhanging snow and shifting rocks... A tricky section with all the rain and very wet boots (thanks for the waterproof socks!). We reach the pass after a passage through the névés and around thirty ibex clumped together in the rocks.
A nice descent to the lake, where we meet a herd of cows, including Marguerite, who tries to make nice with us. A tedious passage on the road (watch your feet!) and then through a tunnel. Back at the Emosson dam, it feels like the end of the trek. Our feet are pretty sore now after the road. We decide to return to Couteray in the evening rather than go back via the Vieux Emosson dam refuge as we'd already done most of this route on the first day. It was a fine end to the hike along the balcony path and goodbye to the valley!
Thank you for posting this trek, which is difficult all in all, but which also leaves room for flat stretches and doesn't just go up and down as it sometimes does in the Italian Alps. In any case, we really enjoyed the scenery and the fact that it wasn't too crowded!
