Description of the walk

From Laragne-Montéglin, head towards Ribiers via the D948. Drive for about 1 km and park in a tarmac lay-by on the right.

(S/E) Cross the departmental road carefully and head down onto the ‘chemin des digues’, then follow it to the right until you rejoin the D948.

(1) Turn right carefully for a few metres and take the track on the left. Follow it uphill to the shooting range.

(2) After the shooting range, the track turns into a path which you should follow uphill, heading west, until you come out onto another track, theGRP® Tour du Buëch.

(3) Turn right and follow the red and yellow markings until you reach a junction.

(4) Veer to the right and walk for about 150 m.

(5) Take the grassy track on the left, which then turns into a footpath, winding through a beautiful forest and passing the ruins of the old village of Piloubeau.

(6) The path joins another grassy track which, to the right, leads to a track suitable for vehicles; follow this to the right until you reach a fork

(7) Ayellowand redGR®sign indicates a small path, and a wooden sign points towards Laragne. Follow this path down to the D948 and turn left to return to the starting point. Stay well on the cycle path and remain vigilant (S/E).

Notes

There are no water points along the route.

Take care not to slip on the descent along this very stony path. Do not attempt to take the paths you will find on either side; these are in fact gullies carved out by rain and can very quickly become treacherous after just a few metres.

Worth a visit

Places to visit include the castle at Mison, which is currently being renovated and can be seen in the valley during the descent, as well as the magnificent citadel of Sisteron.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A short, very pleasant route, partly through woodland – best done in spring; it’s probably too hot in summer

A lovely, fairly varied walk that’s not at all difficult.

I preferred to do it the other way round to avoid the steeper descent over the scree.
From the ruins, you can easily reach the ridge. It’s well worth a look.
