Ascent of Gorbeia Peak from Pagomakurre
Hike from the Pagomakurre car park to Gorbeia Peak. No technical difficulties, magnificent landscapes, horses, cows and sheep, guarded by very calm sheepdogs if you follow the basic rules.
It is best to hike when the weather is slightly overcast or to set off very early in the morning as there is no shade along the route. Please note that it is very windy at the summit.
Erlo-Xoxote from Azpeitia
A beautiful hike with magnificent views from Erlo and Xoxote. The first part is steep, climbing up to Erlo on a rocky path. You can picnic at the Xoxote refuge, which serves drinks, sandwiches and coffee (open from April to mid-October except Mondays).
Ganboa Circular Loop
A superb circular route in the karst massif of the Sierra de Aralar to reach Ganboa (or Ganbo, 1,413 m), the highest point in the area. A few slightly technical sections; please read the description carefully. GPS or the Visorando app recommended.
From Zumaia to Deba
A magnificent hike along the coastline with its schist cliffs via the GR® 121 trail. However, it is quite physically demanding with 650 metres of elevation gain and a distance of 16 km.
Return by train for €2.90.
The hike is also known as the Flysch Route.
Lukun - Pagoeta
A beautiful circular route in the Natural Park starting from the Lukun area, with the option of having a picnic at the start or end of the hike.
The path passes by the Agorregi forge and mills as it circles the Iturraran.
A tour of Zarautz
This short hike allows you to discover some of the sights of the town of Zarautz, including its famous beach and a few historical monuments. It is therefore a semi-urban hike. The first part takes place in the town. The second part takes you through Vista Alegre Park, where you climb to higher ground and quickly leave the town behind. The return journey is through the forest.
Orio - Itxaspe
A circular route starting from the village of Orio at the mouth of the river of the same name. It will allow you to admire the coastline before returning to the town via narrow streets that are well worth exploring.
Estella the Beautiful
The medieval old town of Estella, through which the River Ega flows, boasts numerous Romanesque and Gothic buildings that bear witness to its former splendour. ‘Estella la bella’, as the pilgrims of the Middle Ages called it, is situated in Navarre, on the Camino Francés, between Puente la Reina and Logroño. I visited this beautiful town during the forty-ninth stage of my Camino de Santiago.
Estella Lizarra - Torres del Rio
Fiftieth stage of the Camino de Santiago. This stage takes you to the southernmost reaches of Navarre, to the picturesque village of Torres del Río, with its Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a jewel of Romanesque art. In the blazing sun, this route is long and gruelling. When you arrive in Irache, known for its wine fountain, you will have walked for only half an hour, and you will still have 27 km to go… yet Irache wine is very strong, even if it goes down easily! Remember to fill your water bottle… with water!
