From Zumaia to Deba

A magnificent hike along the coastline with its schist cliffs via the GR® 121 trail. However, it is quite physically demanding with 650 metres of elevation gain and a distance of 16 km.

Return by train for €2.90.

The hike is also known as the Flysch Route.

Hello,
A lovely walk on Friday 12 June 2026 in glorious weather. The ground was dry with no muddy patches.
The route is very well signposted with local signs indicating Zumaïa – Deba. It follows a good portion of the ‘Way of St James’, which it leaves at point 6.
The route is listed as 15.5 km, but personally I clocked up nearly 17 km on my GPS.
The scenery is fabulous, especially at low tide. There are plenty of people and water points at points 4 and 9 on the route.
This route is demanding in hot weather.
Many thanks to Visorandonneur Uxel 85.

We went on this hike after a few days of rain, which had left the path thoroughly waterlogged: so be careful of mud, long muddy puddles and steep sections that had become very slippery.
The views are incredible, and the path is really lovely both along the cliff edge and inland, with several information points explaining the Flysch formation. We found the last 5 km less pleasant due to even more mud, and the finish near Deba was less scenic. Pintxos and cerveza were most welcome!
