Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the tourist office in the village of Allos.

(S/E) Take the street opposite the tourist office and turn right down the pedestrian street.

(1) Take the first left after the Saint-Sébastien Chapel and cross the main road through the village to continue along the street running alongside the post office. Turn right at the first white and red markings indicating the start of the GR® towards Lac d'Allos. Cross the bridge over the Chadoulin and start the trail to immediately reach the Pont du Moulin marker.

(2) Turn left towards the lake. Walk alongside the stream at varying distances and you will reach an intersection marked by a GR®56 signpost.

(3) Turn left and follow the markings to reach the La Cluite signpost.

(4) Continue along the ascending track on your right until you reach the Parking de la Cluite marker (this is about a ten-minute walk on your right).

(5) Turn left towards Lac d'Allos, cross the footbridge over a small stream and you will see a new signpost indicating Lac d'Allos.

(6) Continue along the track below on your left, cross the footbridge over the Chaloudin and then, further on, the footbridge over a small tributary before arriving at a viewpoint overlooking the magnificent Chaloudin waterfall.

(7) Continue the ascent along the same path and you will come out onto the tarmac road leading to the Lac d'Allos car park.

(8) Follow it for about a hundred metres before returning to the path below the next hairpin bend in the road. Further up, you will find the tarmac road again.

(9) Turn right and cross the Lac d'Allos car park to reach the Mercantour National Park information point (wooden hut).

(10) Take the path leading to the Lac d'Allos refuge and you will arrive at the signpost indicating the intersection between the Lac d'Allos refuge and Mont Pelat: possible alternative route, see the Practical Information section.

(11) Continue straight ahead and follow the sign for Lac d'Allos - Col de l'Encombrette.

(12) Turn left towards the lake, which is 15 minutes away. Reach the Refuge du Lac d'Allos (2,240 m). Enjoy the magnificent view of the breathtaking Lac d'Allos, the largest natural high-altitude lake in Europe. You will find a water source behind the refuge, via the terrace.

(13) Once you are well rested, take the path that climbs to the left before the refuge, towards the small Chapelle de Notre-Dame des Monts. The signpost indicates Mont Pelat as a 2 hour 45 minute walk. The path is easy to follow, marked in white and red (GR®) + yellow and red (GRP®). Head for the signpost at the junction between the Laus car park and Mont Pelat.

(14) Head towards the latter to reach a new signpost indicating Mont Pelat at 2 hours.

(15) Continue straight ahead on the trail to the intersection between Mont Pelat and Le Cimet, with the trail towards Le Cimet indicated by a yellow cross on the ground.

(16) Turn left to begin the ascent to the summit of Mont Pelat. The path is once again easy to follow, alternating between yellow markings and cairns. Be careful on the climb, especially at the end, as the trail consists of stones and rubble through the many switchbacks. Finally, reach the summit of Mont Pelat, at an altitude of 3,051 metres.

(E) You will have climbed nearly 1,700 metres since leaving the village of Allos, which makes up the vast majority of the ascent of this two-day circular. You can choose to bivouac at the summit if there is space (beware of the wind). Otherwise, you can choose to descend to the point (16) where there are numerous stone circles where you can pitch your tent.
