Description of the walk

On leaving Val d'Allos le Village, heading towards Col d'Allos, turn right after the bridge. Follow the road up to the Rochecline residence, pass it and continue straight on along the track. Car park at La Haute Colette.

(S/E) At the house on your left, take the path leading uphill towards Montagne de Cheiroueche. Follow this single path until you reach a fork.

(1) Turn left, ignoring the path on your right. Walk past a building and continue your ascent.

(2) On the ridge, turn right towards La Baisse de Prenier.
(Turn left if you’re heading to Rochegrand).

Follow the path to the next junction just before La Baisse de Prenier.

(3) Head down to the right and zigzag across the meadow before entering the forest towards Carrefour de Prenier.

(4) At the crossroads, turn right towards Cabane de Prenier.

(5) Continue to the right, head downhill and pass the Cabane Forestière de Prenier. Continue downhill.

(6) Further on, ignore the path branching off to your right and follow the main path. Enjoy the gentle descent until you reach the back of the farm.

(7) Take the path that crosses the farm and leads you back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Bring drinking water and a packed lunch.
At certain times of year, a herd is present in these pastures.

Worth a visit

In the summer season, take the time to stop off at the village of Allos with its bars and restaurants.
For activities, enjoy the leisure park, archery, tennis, riding centre and paragliding.
And, of course, plenty of other hiking trails.

Hike completed on 19 August 2024.
Access to the Haute Colette via a track. It’s a bit bumpy, but it’s a breeze, unless you’re in a sports car 😉
The warning about a ‘high-risk’ section is no longer really relevant. You just need to be a bit careful. Especially in wet weather.
Otherwise, it’s a lovely, easy hike that takes you to the edge of the Mercantour National Park, with views towards the Col d’Allos. You’re sure to spot marmots and chamois.
We bumped into Marc and Nadine, a very friendly shepherd and shepherdess with their 1,100 sheep and a few dogs.
Once you reach point 2 of the walk, make the most of it and head on to Rochegrand.

Hello fanfanjac,

At the start of the description, it states that this is a track!
It’s been four years since I published this walk (which, incidentally, is marked on the tourist office’s walking map with this starting point), and the roads are deteriorating – even more quickly if they aren’t tarmac-surfaced. I’m sorry to hear that you couldn’t make it to the starting point.

Best regards

We were disappointed by the lack of details regarding the starting point, which is actually a track requiring an off-road vehicle as there are sections with lots of stones and quite large potholes (and, incidentally, roadworks were underway), and it’s very long! This wasn’t mentioned. So we turned back after 20 minutes of climbing!
We set off via the Col d’Allos, which joins this hike, but decided to do Rochegrand instead.

Do the circular loop in the opposite direction as the climb is less steep
The start is at the end of the road from the car park; go behind the farmhouse and follow the GR
There are a few tricky sections due to scree and fallen trees
At the forest house, take the path on the left which climbs to the summit
On the ridge there is a 360° view; from there, follow the path marked in yellow which leads back to the car park
It’s easier this way

Saw a flock of vultures circling above what looked like a deer carcass. Nice outing.

Hike undertaken during a heatwave: two-thirds of the route is under the trees.
You can get water at the Rochegrand forest hut.
Lots of flowers.
No herds, so no Patous.
