Westlicher Limesweg (E5) from Neckarburken to Neckarzimmern

After conquering France, the Romans advanced across the Rhine. The Odenwald Limes was built to secure the route between the Main and Neckar rivers, which were considered natural borders. Built around 85 AD, this border wall was intended to protect the Roman province of Germania Superior.
The fifth and final stage of your hike takes you along the former border line from Neckarburken to Neckarzimmern.
During this scenically and culturally enriching tour, you will pass the remains of Roman watchtowers, forts (troop quarters), bathing facilities and border fortifications. Informative boards point out the sights and provide insights into life in the former border region.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: On the Western Limes Trail

Description of the walk

Start: The starting point is in front of the old town hall in Neckarburken (Brunnengasse)

Getting

(S) You start today's stage in front of the Old Town Hall in Neckarburken, cross Mosbacher Straße at the traffic lights, turn left, take Sulzbacher Straße half right and walk straight ahead into Friedhofweg.

(1) After the Schillerstraße junction, turn left down a narrow path to the partially reconstructed baths of the Neckarburken cohort fort. An information board shows the location of the fort, the baths and the course of the Limes, among other things.

Back on Friedhofweg, turn left, cross Kastellstraße and continue along Friedhofweg for a short distance.

(2) At the entrance to the cemetery, turn left and walk down the meadow to the remains of the Neckarburken numerus fort.

Back on Friedhofweg, turn right and then left at the crossroads into Kastellstraße. Walk steadily uphill, past a playground. Kastellstraße becomes Sulzbacher Straße. Walk along the paved road past the SV Neckarburken sports field and up the slope. After the third bend, you will see a wooden roof with a fence at the top of the forest.

(3) Walk past it and then turn left towards the reconstructed Roman lime kiln. A few benches invite you to take a short break. Unfortunately, there is no information board explaining the function and significance of the lime kiln. However, you are rewarded with a magnificent view to the north-west as far as the highest point of the Odenwald, the Katzenbuckel (627 m).

(4) Back on the main path, continue to the left and pass the former location of guard post WP 10/62a. Unfortunately, there is nothing to see apart from the information board.

(5) At the next crossroads, you will see a stone signpost about 1.5 m high on your right and turn right onto the gravel path.

(6) Continue straight ahead and pass the last Roman artefact on this hike, the information board for guard post WP 10/63. Unfortunately, there is nothing to see here except the board.

At the next fork, keep left towards Hornberg Castle. Walk past the Mosbach model airfield to the next crossroads.

(7) Here, turn left and walk gently downhill. After about 500 metres, turn right and you will reach the L527 country road. Cross this road with caution and walk straight ahead ("Bergfeldweg") into the Bergfeld district of Mosbach.

(8) At the next intersection, you can turn right onto Allfelder Weg and stock up on supplies at number 27 (Bergfelder Hofladen). Or you can simply continue straight ahead until you reach a T-junction.

There, turn left and follow the dirt road past the electricity pylons until you reach the next T-junction. Turn left again, cross the Luttenbach stream, pass a pig farm and you will reach the K3946 district road.

(9) Turn right and walk along the Waldeck, then turn left, pass a barrier and walk straight ahead along the edge of the forest. You will enter the forest and after a while you will see a hut on your left.

(10) Behind the hut is a rest area. At the next crossroads, there is another signpost. To your left, you will see a small hut with a (private?) playground. Turn right here. Continue straight ahead through the forest for a while until you reach another T-junction.

(11) Turn right here towards Hornberg Castle. At the next fork, take the left path. After a while, you will come out of the forest, walk across the field, then along the edge of the forest and reach another road. Turn left here.

(12) At a stone signpost about 1.5 metres high, turn left again onto a wide gravel path.

(13) A few metres further on, there is a wooden bench where you can take a short break.
Continue along the wide gravel path. You will pass a large solar park on your left.

(14) At the second solar park, turn right (signposted towards Burg Hornberg) into the forest. The path descends slightly. Continue straight ahead across the next three crossroads until you reach another crossroads.

(15) Here, the Westlicher Limesweg meets another great long-distance hiking trail, the Neckarsteig (curved blue N). Turn right, cross the Steinbach stream and walk straight ahead on a forest path along the Steinbach (on your left). Depending on the season, you will not see anything except the deep stream bed (for orientation, follow the Neckarsteig signs). You will reach the car park at Hornberg Castle.

(16) Enter the castle courtyard through the north gate. The hiking trail branches off to the right before the north gate, so you will need to return to the north gate after visiting the castle. Now hike leisurely down to Neckarzimmern.

(17) There you will reach a road (K3946) and turn left. After crossing the railway tracks, you will come to the "Hauptstraße" (B27), turn left, pass the Alte Kelter and the Neue Schloss.

(E) Then turn left onto Bahnhofsweg and you will reach your destination, the railway station in Neckarzimmern.
